Al Ahly’s participation in the Basketball Africa League is no longer seen as a routine appearance by an Egyptian team aiming for decent results or progression through a few rounds. Instead, over recent years, the club has evolved into one of the continent’s most ambitious sporting projects, aiming to establish dominance in the sport. With every new participation, expectations continue to rise regarding Al Ahly’s ability not just to compete, but to challenge seriously for the title.

Al Ahly enters this season’s BAL Finals in Rwanda with a strong sense of confidence, following clear technical development and growing stability within the squad, alongside a group of experienced players capable of handling high-pressure games. All of this has positioned the Red team as one of the leading contenders expected to go deep into the tournament and compete strongly for the continental crown.

Returning Stars Ignite Al Ahly’s Ambitions

The team delegation arrived in Kigali amid a focused and determined atmosphere ahead of the knockout stage of the continental tournament, scheduled to take place from May 22 to May 30. This edition is widely expected to be one of the most competitive and balanced in the tournament’s history.

Al Ahly enter the competition with high confidence after recently securing the Egyptian Basketball Super League title against Al Ittihad Alexandria, in a final series that once again highlighted the team’s mentality and ability to handle pressure in decisive moments.

Head coach Linus Gavril has worked on building a squad that combines experience, athleticism, and individual quality, with the return of influential players capable of changing matches in crucial moments. Among the biggest boosts is the return of Amr Zahran after missing the qualifiers, alongside South Sudanese star Nuni Omot, one of the key players behind Al Ahly’s 2023 BAL triumph and a major source of offensive firepower and African experience.

On the other hand, the squad saw the absence of veteran captain Seif Samir and recent signing Malek Yasser, decisions that reflect the coaching staff’s search for the perfect balance before entering a stage where mistakes could prove costly.

The African Dream Begins in Rwanda

Al Ahly’s continental campaign will rely on a core of experienced names, including Ehab Amin, Amr El Gendy, Zach Lofton, Jonathan Jordan, Kevin Murphy, and Osayi Osifo. The squad offers tactical variety through defensive intensity, offensive speed, and physical strength, especially in games decided by the smallest details.

The Egyptian champions did not reach the finals easily. They came through a difficult qualification campaign in Morocco, finishing second in the Sahara Conference behind Tunisia’s US Monastir after recording four wins and one defeat. Despite not topping the group, Al Ahly demonstrated a strong competitive mentality, particularly in high-pressure encounters.

In the quarterfinals, Al Ahly will face Senegal’s Ville de Dakar in what appears to be a balanced matchup on paper, but one that carries major tactical challenges due to the Senegalese side’s fast-paced style and aggressive transition offense. The tie will be played over two games, with point difference deciding the winner if each team claims one victory, making every possession potentially decisive.

Inside the club, the objective goes far beyond simply reaching the latter stages. There is a clear determination to reclaim the African crown and prove that the 2023 title was not a one-time achievement, but rather the beginning of a new era of Egyptian dominance in African basketball.
