Arab Cup or Africa Cup: Egyptian Federation's Challenge

February 21, 2025
The management of the Egyptian national team faces a significant challenge in prioritizing its participation in the Arab Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations at the end of 2025, given the packed schedule and the high ambitions of the Pharaohs.
The Egyptian football team is confronted with the challenge of determining its priorities between participating in the Arab Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations, as both tournaments are scheduled closely together. These decisions hold particular importance in light of the Pharaohs’ ambition to achieve success in both competitions.
The Critical Timing of the Tournaments
The Arab Cup for national teams will conclude on December 18, 2025, while the Africa Cup of Nations will commence on December 21 of the same year. Since both tournaments are under the auspices of FIFA, they are of great significance to the Egyptian team.
The Egyptian Football Association faces difficult choices in this regard. Will they send the senior national team to participate in one of the tournaments while the Olympic team competes in the other? Or will the senior team participate in both tournaments despite the tight schedule and overlapping matches?
The Pharaohs’ Ambitions in Both Tournaments
In the Arab Cup, the Pharaohs aim to clinch the title after Algeria won the championship in the last edition in 2021. Meanwhile, in the Africa Cup of Nations, the team aspires to reclaim the continental title, which they have not held since 2010.
These decisions will be a topic of discussion within the Egyptian Football Association in the coming period, as they aim to determine the most suitable strategy for the team during this critical phase, which may dictate the future of Egyptian football in the coming years. Success in both tournaments will be a challenging task, placing decision-makers in a difficult position when choosing between priorities.
