Watch: From the heart of Seattle.. Egypt resist Belgium and secure a valuable draw

Egypt’s start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup was far from ordinary. The Pharaohs played their opening match of the tournament against Belgium, one of Europe’s strongest teams, amid huge anticipation from the fans. Many expected a very difficult match for Egypt because of the strength of the opponent and the experience of its players, but what happened on the pitch was different.
Egypt did not enter the match just to defend, and they did not look like a team afraid of Belgium’s name. On the contrary, the Pharaohs delivered a strong and organized performance, managing to come away with an important 1-1 draw and earn a valuable point at the start of their journey in Group G.
This draw should not be seen as just one point in the standings. The result carries great value because it came against a team with big names and major experience in world tournaments. Despite that, Egypt managed to make their presence felt during important periods of the match and showed real character, especially in the first half, which was one of the team’s best spells in terms of confidence, organization, and the ability to threaten Thibaut Courtois’ goal.
Egypt started the match well. The Pharaohs did not need much time to settle into the game. From the early minutes, they tried to show that the match would not be easy for Belgium. With Mohamed Salah moving into creative areas, and Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Ziko making runs forward, Egypt found spaces behind Belgium’s defense and began to create danger step by step.
The key moment of the first half came when Emam Ashour scored Egypt’s opening goal with a powerful shot, after a move that started with a smart pass from Mohamed Salah. This goal was not just a lead on the scoreboard. It was a major boost for the players and fans because it came against a big team and at an early time, proving that Egypt could compete face to face and not just wait for the opponent’s mistakes.
The goal made Emam Ashour’s night even more special, as he entered Egyptian football history in the World Cup by becoming the fourth Egyptian player to score in the tournament. His brilliance did not stop at the goal, as he also won the Man of the Match award in Egypt’s game against Belgium, confirming the major role he played on the pitch, whether through scoring, pressing, or supporting the midfield.
An Egyptian First Half.. and Salah with the Mind of a Playmaker
One of the most important features of the match was the different role played by Mohamed Salah. Egypt’s captain did not appear only as a winger looking for his usual spaces. Instead, he moved a lot in midfield areas and played an important role in creating chances and linking the team’s lines.
Salah’s movement between Belgium’s midfield and defense helped Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Ziko run into spaces and kept the Belgian defense under constant pressure. Salah was not isolated from the game. He was a key part of Egypt’s plan in building attacks and moving the ball into dangerous areas.
Egypt came close to scoring a second goal on more than one occasion. Courtois had to step in during dangerous moments to save his team, while Marmoush caused major problems for Belgium’s defense with his speed and movement. Ziko also had a good impact with his pressing and runs behind the defenders. These details made the first half clearly lean in Egypt’s favor, not only because of Emam Ashour’s goal, but also because of the team’s overall shape on the pitch.
On the other side, Belgium tried to gradually get back into the match, but they came up against a well-organized Egyptian defense. Mostafa Shobeir looked calm and solid in goal, the defensive line dealt with many difficult balls, and the midfielders worked hard to close down spaces in front of Belgium’s stars and stop them from moving freely.
Although Egypt were better during many parts of the match, Belgium’s strength became clear in the second half. The Belgian team pressed more, relying on crosses and movement inside the penalty area, until the equalizer arrived in a harsh way for the Pharaohs.
Belgium’s goal came after pressure from Romelu Lukaku inside the box. The ball hit Mohamed Hany and went into Egypt’s net as an own goal. It was a frustrating moment for the Egyptian team because the goal did not come from a clear, well-built attack, but from confusion inside the area. Still, it brought the match back to level terms and gave Belgium more energy in the following minutes.
A Point That Feels Like a Win.. and a Message Before New Zealand
After the equalizer, Belgium tried to use the momentum and search for a winning goal. Their pressure increased, and Kevin De Bruyne’s danger appeared in more than one moment. The post or crossbar also helped Egypt in one of the dangerous chances.
But the most important thing was that Egypt did not collapse after conceding. This is a very important point when evaluating the match. The Pharaohs stayed compact and dealt with Belgium’s pressure with strong focus, even though the final minutes were difficult and included serious attempts from the opponent.
Hossam Hassan made several important substitutions. Mohamed Salah and Mostafa Ziko went off, while Zizo and Hamza Abdel Karim came on. Later, Rami Rabia replaced Emam Ashour. These changes were aimed at refreshing the team physically and maintaining balance on the pitch, especially as Belgium’s pace and intensity increased in the second half.
The final minutes also saw Egypt appeal for a penalty after Zizo went down inside the box, but the referee did not award anything. The match continued until the final whistle and ended in a 1-1 draw.
The point Egypt earned against Belgium could be very important in the group calculations. It is true that victory was close, especially after Egypt took the lead in the first half, but drawing against a team of Belgium’s level at the start of the World Cup remains a good result, as long as Egypt know how to build on it in the next match.
The next match against New Zealand will be completely different. The draw with Belgium gave Egypt a strong morale boost and great confidence, but the New Zealand match will require even more focus and a clearer desire to win, because taking all three points there could strongly open the door for the Pharaohs to qualify for the next round.
More important than the result is that Egypt presented a respectable image. The team did not enter the match waiting to lose, and they did not rely only on defending. They tried, attacked, scored, and came close to winning. In a major tournament like the World Cup, this start gives the fans a real reason for optimism, but at the same time it places greater responsibility on the players and the coaching staff in the upcoming matches.
Emam Ashour’s performance also gives the national team an additional source of strength before the rest of the group stage. He did not just score an ordinary goal. He wrote his name among Egypt’s World Cup scorers and won the best player award in a difficult match against a major team. It was an important message that the Pharaohs do not depend on one star only, but have more than one player capable of making the difference.
Egypt’s draw with Belgium was not the end of the dream. It could be the beginning of a different story in the World Cup. A point against a big team, a strong performance, and clear character at an important moment. Now, the biggest task for the Pharaohs is to turn this good start into an even bigger step against New Zealand.
