Egypt's Dream Shattered in the Final Minutes... Messi and Argentina Seal a Dramatic World Cup Clash

Egypt came within minutes of producing one of the greatest achievements in its FIFA World Cup history before Argentina, inspired by Lionel Messi, staged a remarkable comeback. After trailing by two goals, the reigning world champions rallied to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory, securing their place in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals and bringing the Pharaohs' inspiring campaign to a heartbreaking end.
Egypt's Dream Start
The match began cautiously, but Egypt made the most of its first clear opportunity. Yasser Ibrahim rose highest from a perfectly delivered corner to head the Pharaohs into the lead in the 15th minute.
Argentina responded by earning a penalty, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir continued his outstanding tournament with a brilliant save to deny Lionel Messi from the spot. Shobeir then produced another superb stop to keep out Alexis Mac Allister and preserve Egypt's advantage.
Early in the second half, Egypt moved even closer to a famous upset when Mostafa Ziko doubled the lead in the 67th minute, leaving Argentina with a mountain to climb.
Argentina's Late Comeback
The defending champions refused to surrender. Cristian Romero sparked the comeback by pulling one goal back in the 79th minute before Messi restored parity just four minutes later, setting up a dramatic finish.
Deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernández capitalized on a defensive lapse to score the decisive winner, completing Argentina's stunning comeback and sending them into the quarterfinals.
Despite the painful defeat, Egypt leaves the tournament with its head held high after producing a courageous performance against one of the favorites to win the World Cup.
Argentina will now face the winner of the Colombia-Switzerland clash in the quarterfinals, while Egypt exits the competition having earned widespread praise for its fighting spirit and impressive performances throughout the tournament.
