The Egyptian Football Association has officially launched an initiative aimed at increasing the number of Egyptian clubs competing in continental tournaments. Its president, Hany Abo Rida, has submitted a formal proposal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requesting changes to the qualification system for both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Abo Rida Makes His Move

The proposal comes in the wake of the impressive performances delivered by African national teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to the Egyptian FA, this is the right moment to expand club representation across the continent and reflect the continued growth of African football.

The proposal calls for each CAF member association to receive one additional continental slot, with the extra places allocated according to CAF's ranking system and competition regulations. Under this model, the highest-ranked associations could be granted up to three clubs in the CAF Champions League and three in the CAF Confederation Cup.

More Opportunities for Clubs

If approved, the additional clubs would begin their campaigns in the preliminary qualifying rounds before attempting to reach the group stage, maintaining the current competition format while creating more opportunities for clubs across Africa.

CAF is expected to review the proposal in the coming days before making a final decision. For the upcoming season, Zamalek has already secured its place in the CAF Champions League as Egyptian Premier League champions, with Pyramids qualifying as runners-up. Al Ahly will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup, while the identity of Egypt's second representative in the tournament has yet to be confirmed.
