Racism Targets IShowSpeed at the World Cup as FIFA Launches Investigation into Argentina Fans Incident

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has delivered plenty of unforgettable moments both on and off the pitch, but one of the biggest talking points has involved American content creator IShowSpeed. What began as a passionate display of support quickly turned into an international controversy after allegations of racist abuse by some Argentina fans prompted FIFA to step in.
Supporting Egypt Puts IShowSpeed in the Spotlight
The fallout from Egypt's Round of 16 clash against Argentina extended far beyond the controversial refereeing decisions. American streamer Darren Watkins Jr., better known as IShowSpeed, found himself at the center of a storm after allegedly being subjected to racist abuse by a section of Argentina supporters inside the stadium.
Speed attended the match wearing Egypt's national team jersey, attracting attention from both fans and television cameras. During his livestream, he reacted passionately to the game, even attempting to distract Lionel Messi before a penalty kick before celebrating goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir's save, making him one of the most recognizable figures in the stands.
As the match progressed, Speed was reportedly confronted by an Argentina supporter over his support for Egypt. The situation later escalated into boos, mockery, and gestures widely condemned as racist following the final whistle, triggering widespread outrage across social media platforms.
FIFA Opens Investigation and Reaffirms Zero Tolerance
The incident was not the first involving Speed during the tournament. Earlier in the World Cup, he was subjected to alleged racist remarks while covering Argentina's match against Cape Verde in Miami, where a supporter directed offensive comments toward him during a livestream. That episode prompted FIFA to launch an official investigation.
In a statement, FIFA confirmed it had immediately begun investigating the incident, emphasizing that the World Cup represents the values of unity, diversity, and mutual respect. The governing body stressed that racism, hatred, and discrimination have no place in football or society and pledged to take appropriate disciplinary action against anyone found responsible.
FIFA also reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on discrimination as calls grew louder for stronger punishment against fans involved in racist behavior, especially after videos of the incidents spread rapidly across social media.
IShowSpeed is one of the world's most influential digital creators, with more than 150 million followers across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and X. He has been covering World Cup matches through a partnership involving FIFA, Fox Sports, and YouTube, making the controversy a major international story.
The incident has also drawn condemnation from leading football figures, including George Weah, who emphasized the need to eliminate hate speech from the sport. He stressed that football must remain a game built on respect, inclusion, and unity, reinforcing the global commitment to protecting the values of the world's biggest sporting event.
