The Egyptian Premier League is entering the 2026-2027 season with a different look, marked by a growing presence of Arab players and a major increase in the financial reward for the champions, alongside a new competition format that is expected to raise the intensity of the title race.

The new season is scheduled to begin on August 21, with 20 teams taking part in a campaign expected to be more competitive, not only because of the value of the title but also because of the changes to the league system and financial incentives.

41 Arab Players Add to the League’s Appeal

The Egyptian Premier League will feature 41 Arab players representing seven different nationalities, highlighting the continued appeal of Egyptian football to Arab professionals.

Morocco and Palestine lead the list with 12 players each, followed by Algeria with eight players and Tunisia with five. Jordan is represented by two players, while Iraq and Lebanon each have one player.

This diversity reflects the growing role of the Arab market in Egyptian football, as clubs increasingly view it as an important source of players capable of adding technical quality and experience to the competition.

50 Million Pounds Raises the Stakes

The changes extend beyond the player market. The Egyptian Professional Clubs Association has raised the league champion’s prize to 50 million Egyptian pounds, compared with only 5 million previously, making the new reward the biggest financial incentive in the competition’s history according to the cited reports.

The new season will be played in two stages. The first stage will feature all 20 teams in a single round-robin format, with each club playing 19 matches before the league is divided into two groups.

The top six teams will enter the championship group to compete for the title and African competition places, while the remaining 14 teams will form the relegation group, with four clubs ultimately dropping to the Professional League.

Each team in the championship group will play five additional matches, bringing its total to 24 games. Teams in the relegation group will play 13 additional matches, reaching a total of 32 games.

The new structure is intended to help complete the season before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, giving the Egyptian national team sufficient time to prepare for the continental tournament.

With the opening day approaching, the new Egyptian Premier League season promises a different kind of challenge: stronger competition, a notable Arab presence and a more complex format, with a record 50 million Egyptian pounds waiting for the club that reaches the top.
