Egypt continued its impressive run at the 2026 Mediterranean Games after Mohamed Hassan, a member of the national Greco-Roman wrestling team, climbed to the top of the podium in the 67kg category, securing the country’s second gold medal at the tournament in Taranto, Italy.

Hassan completed his campaign with a strong performance in the final against Algeria’s Faisal Ben Faraj, winning 3-1 to claim the title and deliver another major achievement for Egyptian wrestling.

Decisive Final

Mohamed Hassan entered the gold-medal bout determined to finish his campaign in style and managed to overcome his Algerian opponent in the 67kg final.

His triumph was significant not only on an individual level, as it increased Egypt’s medal tally to five at the time of his victory: two golds, one silver and two bronze medals.

Swimmer Abdelrahman Sameh had previously won Egypt’s first gold medal, while Farida Osman secured bronze. Youssef Ramadan added another bronze in the 100m butterfly, and Mahmoud Farag claimed silver in the 60kg Greco-Roman wrestling competition.

Egypt’s Medal Run

Egypt is competing in 23 sports at the 20th edition of the Mediterranean Games, with the delegation aiming to increase its medal tally before the competition concludes on September 3.

The Taranto Games feature 3,803 athletes representing 26 countries, adding further significance to Hassan’s achievement amid strong competition from across the Mediterranean region.

Egypt also boasts an impressive historical record at the Games, ranking sixth on the all-time medal table with 620 medals: 156 gold, 209 silver and 255 bronze.

With Mohamed Hassan adding another gold to the delegation’s campaign, Egyptian sport once again demonstrated its ability to compete across different disciplines, with more medal opportunities still ahead during the remaining days of the Games.
