Trabzonspor endured one of their toughest European nights of the season in Budapest after suffering a 4-0 defeat to Hungarian side Ferencvaros, a result that ended their Europa League campaign and sent them into the league phase of the UEFA Conference League. The dramatic evening was followed by head coach Fatih Tekke's resignation.

The Turkish side entered the second leg needing to overturn a 1-0 home defeat, but their comeback hopes were severely damaged when Ruslan Malinovskyi was shown a straight red card in the 13th minute, forcing Trabzonspor to play most of the game with ten men.

Ferencvaros quickly took advantage of their numerical superiority, with Callum O'Dowda opening the scoring in the 19th minute and leaving Trabzonspor facing an increasingly difficult task.

Salah Features in European Collapse

Mohamed Salah started the match as Trabzonspor looked to turn the tie around, but the early dismissal significantly restricted the Turkish side's attacking threat.

Ferencvaros doubled their advantage through Marius Corbu in the 54th minute before Trabzonspor were reduced to nine men when Sydney Lopes Cabral received his second yellow card in the 57th minute.

Just two minutes later, Yusuf Bamidele converted a penalty to make it 3-0, while Salah was substituted in the 64th minute without being able to inspire a comeback.

The Egyptian star completed a total of 153 minutes across the two playoff matches after starting both legs.

Kristoffer Lisztes completed the scoring in the 86th minute as Ferencvaros sealed a commanding 5-0 aggregate victory and booked their place in the Europa League league phase.

Resignation After the Heavy Defeat

The consequences of the defeat went beyond Trabzonspor's Europa League elimination, as Fatih Tekke announced his resignation immediately after the match, accepting responsibility alongside his coaching staff for the heavy loss.

Tekke explained that his team had started the game positively before the early red card completely changed the contest, but admitted that a defeat of such magnitude was unacceptable to him and prompted his decision to step down.

He also addressed Trabzonspor supporters and players, expressing confidence that the club could recover from the setback and achieve better results during the remainder of its European campaign, despite his departure.

Although Trabzonspor's Europa League journey is now over, their European season will continue in the UEFA Conference League league phase, giving Salah and his teammates another opportunity to respond after the disappointment in Budapest.

Trabzonspor now enter a very different chapter: a new European competition and potentially a new head coach, following a remarkable night that brought four goals conceded, two red cards, Europa League elimination and the resignation of their manager within a matter of hours.
