Bayern end 14 years of Real Madrid dominance and reach the semi-finals after a dramatic night at the Allianz Arena

Bayern Munich’s place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals was not just another qualification at Real Madrid’s expense. It carried special significance, as the German side eliminated the Spanish club from the competition for the first time since the 2011–12 season. Over the years, Real Madrid had held the upper hand in the knockout meetings between the two teams, but Bayern finally turned the tables this season after winning the first leg 2-1 and then taking the second leg 4-3, advancing 6-4 on aggregate to set up a semi-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
The match began at a frantic pace, with Arda Guler giving Real Madrid the lead after just 34 seconds, capitalising on a mistake by Manuel Neuer to put his side in front early. Bayern Munich responded quickly, however, as Aleksandar Pavlovic equalised in the 6th minute, bringing the contest back to level terms almost immediately.
The drama continued in the first half, with Guler striking again to make it 2-1 for Real Madrid in the 29th minute from a free kick. Harry Kane then brought Bayern back into the game with their second goal in the 38th minute. Just before the break, Kylian Mbappe scored Real Madrid’s third in the 42nd minute, sending the Spanish side into half-time with a 3-2 lead, while the qualification battle remained wide open.
Shifts in momentum
This was not simply an open attacking contest, but a match defined by constant shifts in control and scoreline. Real Madrid looked more effective during spells of the first half, especially through the pace of Guler and the movement of Mbappe, while Bayern showed clear resilience and an ability to respond quickly each time they fell behind.
In the second half, the number of goals dropped, but the tension rose sharply as the match moved toward its conclusion. Real Madrid tried to stay balanced and search for another goal, while Bayern continued to push forward, sensing the tie was still alive. Then came the key turning point when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off in the 86th minute, leaving Real Madrid to finish the game with ten men and giving Bayern a clear chance to press harder in the closing minutes.
Late decision
Bayern Munich took advantage of their numerical superiority almost immediately. Luis Diaz scored Bayern’s third goal in the 89th minute, restoring the German side’s aggregate advantage. Bayern did not stop there, and continued to press until Michael Olise added the fourth goal in the 90+4th minute, sealing both the match and qualification in dramatic fashion.
With this win, Bayern Munich not only secured their place in the semi-finals, but also confirmed their superiority across the two legs, showing greater composure in the decisive moments, especially in the late stages that ultimately made the difference against Real Madrid.
