Tunisia have turned to one of international football's most experienced crisis managers after appointing Herve Renard as head coach following the heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their World Cup opener. With Japan and the Netherlands still to come, the Eagles of Carthage have little room for error if they are to keep their hopes alive.
The decision was not just a normal coaching change. It came as a quick move to bring life back to a team that suffered a strong blow in its first World Cup match. The defeat against Sweden did not only affect Tunisia’s position in the group, but also raised concerns about the team’s form and its ability to continue competing, especially with two difficult matches still to come against Japan and the Netherlands.
A Shocking Start Ends Lamouchi’s Spell
Sabri Lamouchi’s time with Tunisia ended quickly and painfully, after a heavy result pushed the Tunisian Federation to act immediately. According to reports, both sides agreed to end the relationship by mutual consent, with the coach leaving the team’s residence, while federation officials started looking for a coach capable of handling the situation in a short time and under huge pressure.
Tunisia did not have much time to experiment or wait. The team entered the World Cup with big ambitions, but found itself bottom of the group with no points after the first round. That made the matches against Japan and the Netherlands the final two chances to correct the path, or at least to present a better image that matches the history of Tunisian football.
Renard.. Emergency Experience at the Right Time
Choosing Herve Renard was not surprising when it comes to experience. The French coach has a long history with national teams and knows very well the atmosphere of major tournaments, especially when the pressure is high and time is limited. He previously led Morocco at the 2018 World Cup, and also coached Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup, where he achieved a historic victory over Argentina, a result that remains one of the most memorable moments in world football.
Renard is also no stranger to African football. He made his name strongly on the continent after winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia, before repeating the achievement with Ivory Coast. That made him one of the most successful coaches in working with African and Arab national teams, leaving a clear mark in more than one experience.
From this point, it seems Tunisia were not only looking for a coach to change the playing style or pick a new starting lineup. The bigger goal was to bring in a strong personality who can quickly restore confidence, impose discipline inside the team, and convince the players that the journey is not over yet, despite the difficult start against Sweden.
Japan and the Netherlands.. A Test With No Room for Mistakes
The task waiting for Renard looks very difficult. The French coach will not have much time to prepare or build new ideas from the beginning. He will have to quickly understand the players’ mental and technical condition, and fix the mistakes that clearly appeared against Sweden, before going into the match against Japan.
This is where the difficulty of the mission becomes clear. Tunisia do not only need defensive adjustments or a few changes in the lineup. The team needs a complete reaction on the pitch. The players must be more organized, stronger, and less nervous, because any new negative result could mean an early end to the dream.
The match against Japan will not be easy either, because the Japanese team is known for its organization, speed, and ability to use spaces well. After that comes the Netherlands, an even harder match against a team with great experience and high-quality players. That is why Renard begins his mission from a very difficult point, but his experience in these situations is the main reason Tunisia put their trust in him.
Renard’s appointment may give Tunisian fans new hope, but it does not mean that all problems will disappear immediately. No matter how experienced the coach is, he needs a quick response from the players and a real desire on the pitch to make up for what happened in the first match.
The bet now is no longer only on Renard’s name, but also on Tunisia’s ability to move past the effects of the defeat against Sweden. If the French coach succeeds in restoring mental balance and organizing the team in a short time, the crisis could turn into a new beginning. But if the same mistakes continue, the change will remain only an emergency step that came after an important part of the opportunity had already been lost.
Still, Renard’s arrival sends a clear message that Tunisia do not want to give up early. The federation moved quickly, the coaching staff changed, and the decision is now in the hands of the players on the pitch. Either the shock against Sweden turns into a fresh starting point, or it becomes the beginning of the end in a World Cup campaign from which Tunisians expected much more.
