Omar Al Ali to Officiate Egypt vs New Zealand Clash as the Pharaohs Chase Their First Win

The eyes of Egyptian football fans are turning to the Canadian city of Vancouver, where Egypt will face New Zealand in an important match in the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage. It is a game with special calculations after both teams started their campaigns in a similar way.
FIFA has announced the appointment of Emirati referee Omar Al Ali to officiate the match, meaning an Arab whistle will be present in a game where the Pharaohs are searching for their first win of the tournament.
The Egypt vs New Zealand match will take place in the early hours of Monday, June 22, at 4:00 AM Cairo time, at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, as part of Group G.
An Arab Whistle and an International Refereeing Team
The selection of Omar Al Ali to officiate the match gives the game a clear Arab flavor, especially as the refereeing team also includes Emirati assistant referee Mohammed Al Hammadi and Qatari assistant referee Taleb Al Marri.
Peruvian referee Kevin Ortega will serve as the fourth official, while his compatriot Michael Orué will be the reserve assistant referee, forming a team that brings together more than one refereeing school for a match that cannot afford mistakes.
The importance of the refereeing team increases because of the circumstances surrounding the match. Both teams enter the game looking for their first victory, and every decision on the pitch could have an impact on the shape of the competition within the group.
Egypt Face an Opportunity That Cannot Be Delayed
Egypt began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, a good result against a strong opponent, but one that is not enough on its own to fulfill the Pharaohs’ ambitions in the tournament.
The match against New Zealand represents a real opportunity to turn a positive start into an important victory, one that would give Egypt a major boost before the final group-stage round and bring them closer to the dream of reaching the next stage.
On the other side, New Zealand enter the match after drawing 2-2 with Iran, a result that shows they are an organized team capable of coming back in games. For that reason, the match will not be as easy as some may imagine.
Egypt need to approach the game with full focus from the very beginning, while maintaining a clear balance between attack and defense, because dropping points could push the Pharaohs into complicated calculations within the group.
Between Egypt’s ambition to achieve a new historic victory and New Zealand’s desire to build on their strong start, Monday morning’s match looks like more than just a group-stage fixture. It is a real test of the Pharaohs’ ability to turn the dream into a practical step at the World Cup.
