Qualification at a Cost: Injuries and Absences Hit Egypt Ahead of Historic Australia Clash

Egypt's national team achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in the nation's history. However, the joy of reaching the knockout stage was overshadowed by a growing list of injuries and suspensions that could complicate the Pharaohs' preparations for their upcoming showdown against Australia.
Egypt secured qualification after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Iran in the final round of Group G, finishing second with five points behind Belgium on goal difference, after coming close to topping the group.
Injuries Strike the Pharaohs at the Worst Possible Time
Egypt’s setbacks against Iran extended beyond surrendering top spot in the group. The match saw several key players suffer setbacks, beginning with defender Mohamed Abdelmonem, who was forced off due to injury. Ahmed Fattouh also failed to complete the match after sustaining an injury, while captain Mohamed Salah's substitution in the second half due to muscular discomfort raised serious concerns within the coaching staff and among Egyptian supporters.
As a result, Egypt head into the Australia clash with concerns over the fitness of Mohamed Abdelmonem, Ahmed Fattouh and Mohamed Salah, while Hamdi Fathi and Hossam Abdelmaguid continue to be monitored. Midfielder Mohannad Lasheen will definitely miss the match through suspension.
The technical staff, led by Hossam Hassan, also faced a tactical dilemma during the match after being forced to bring Yasser Ibrahim back into action following Abdelmonem's injury, despite plans to give him a period of rest.
Hossam Hassan: "I Have Lions, and I'm Not Afraid"
Despite the mounting problems, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan expressed complete confidence in his squad's ability to overcome the challenges, insisting that his team possesses enough quality and character to cope with any absences.
Hassan admitted that Ahmed Fattouh's injury affected the flow of the game, emphasizing that Egypt had been controlling the match before the injury setbacks disrupted their rhythm. He also confirmed that the medical staff is awaiting a final assessment of Mohamed Salah's condition, while expressing hope that Hamdi Fathi could return in time for the Australia clash.
The Egypt manager stressed that he has no concerns about the growing list of absentees, praising his players for performing "like lions" and insisting that fear of injuries has no place when coaching a national team with Egypt's ambitions and expectations.
Egypt will now face Australia in a historic Round of 32 encounter next Friday, with hopes of extending their remarkable World Cup journey and writing another memorable chapter in the nation's football history, despite the significant challenges posed by injuries and suspensions.
