Hamza Abdel Karim is edging closer to what could be the biggest step of his career so far after an impressive Barcelona pre-season put the Egyptian striker firmly on Hansi Flick’s radar ahead of Sunday’s La Liga opener against Elche.

Early expectations suggested that the young forward would begin the campaign on the bench, but his performances during pre-season have strengthened his chances of making the squad, especially as Barcelona continue to assess their options at centre-forward.

Form That Demands Attention

Hamza’s rise with the first team has been far from a brief opportunity. He earned Flick’s trust after returning from Egypt’s 2026 World Cup campaign and joined Barcelona’s preparations immediately without taking a break.

The Egyptian forward also delivered impressive numbers during pre-season. He played 241 minutes, making him the third-most used Barcelona player during the preparations, while scoring four goals.

His tally included two goals against Birmingham City, one against Basel and another against Al Ahly in the Joan Gamper Trophy. That final goal gave him another major boost, particularly after Flick praised his qualities as a striker.

Flick experimented with different solutions during pre-season, including using Raphinha as a false nine, while Lamine Yamal, Ademiyi, Gordon, Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez provide further attacking alternatives.

Despite the competition, Hamza’s situation could be particularly interesting. Barcelona have not brought in another striker following Ferran Torres’ departure to Paris Saint-Germain, potentially creating more room for the Egyptian teenager to enter Flick’s plans.

If selected, Hamza is more likely to begin against Elche on the bench rather than start the match. However, simply making the squad would represent an important sign of his growing status within the first team.
