Mokwena’s Perfect Start Continues as Pyramids Beat Abu Qir to Go Top

Pyramids continued their impressive start to the 2026-27 Egyptian Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Abu Qir Fertilizers on Thursday at the Air Defense Stadium in the second round of the competition.
Youssef Obama and Odeh Fakhouri scored on either side of half-time to secure Pyramids’ second successive victory, while Fakhouri capped off an impressive performance by receiving the Man of the Match award.
Obama Breaks the Deadlock
Abu Qir started the game positively and attempted to put Pyramids under early pressure, earning three corners in quick succession. However, the hosts’ defense, supported by goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy, dealt with the danger.
Pyramids gradually began to impose themselves on the contest, with Walid El Karti coming close to opening the scoring in the 12th minute, only for the Abu Qir goalkeeper to deny his effort from inside the penalty area.
Abu Qir appealed for a penalty in the 23rd minute following an incident involving Mohamed Ashraf, but the referee allowed play to continue.
Pyramids eventually found the breakthrough just before half-time. Karim Hafez delivered an excellent pass into the penalty area for Youssef Obama, who fired home in the second minute of stoppage time to give the hosts the lead.
Fakhouri Seals Top Spot
Pyramids quickly doubled their advantage after the restart as Odeh Fakhouri produced a powerful long-range strike in the 48th minute that left the Abu Qir goalkeeper unable to keep it out.
Fakhouri found the net again in the 56th minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Obama also thought he had scored his second goal in the 75th minute before another offside decision denied Pyramids a third.
Pyramids comfortably protected their advantage until the final whistle to record a second consecutive league victory after opening their campaign with a 3-0 win away to Ghazl El Mahalla.
The result took Pyramids to six points and the top of the Egyptian Premier League standings on goal difference, while Abu Qir remained on three points after beginning their season with a 1-0 victory over National Bank of Egypt.
Fakhouri’s night was completed when he was named Man of the Match following his influential display and second-half goal, underlining Pyramids’ perfect start to the new league campaign.
