Egypt’s FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification campaign went from renewed optimism to serious concern in the space of three games after the Pharaohs followed a major win over Senegal with consecutive defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and DR Congo.

Egypt opened the Dakar window by beating Senegal 76-67, a result that brought them firmly back into the qualification race. They then lost 72-66 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering an agonising 77-75 defeat to DR Congo. FIBA confirmed that none of the 12 remaining African teams had either qualified or been eliminated by the end of the window.

Egypt Drop to Fifth in Group F

The two defeats leave Egypt fifth in Group F with a 4-5 record and 13 points.

Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire lead the group at 7-2, while Angola and Mali are both 6-3. Egypt sit behind all four at 4-5, with DR Congo bottom on 3-6.

That leaves the Pharaohs two wins behind Angola and Mali with only three games remaining.

Three Games and Little Margin for Error

Egypt will complete their qualifying campaign in February 2027 with three more games against Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and DR Congo.

Their current 4-5 record means the best possible finish is 7-5 if they sweep the final window.

The situation is difficult but not hopeless. Angola and Mali must also play Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and DR Congo, meaning there are still enough head-to-head results between the teams above Egypt for the standings to change significantly.

What Does Egypt Need to Qualify?

Under FIBA’s format, the top two teams in each of the two second-round groups qualify directly for the 2027 World Cup, while Africa’s fifth and final ticket goes to the best third-placed team across Groups E and F.

For Egypt, going 3-0 in February is clearly the strongest route.

Three victories would take their final record to 7-5 and give them a realistic opportunity to climb above Angola or Mali into third place. Depending on other results, even second place could remain mathematically possible.

However, a 7-5 finish would not guarantee qualification.

Egypt would still need Angola and/or Mali to drop enough games to allow the Pharaohs to move above them or enter a favourable tiebreak situation.

A 2-1 final window would leave Egypt at 6-6. Qualification could still be mathematically possible, but the path would become considerably more complicated, requiring major help from other results as well as favourable tiebreakers.

Third Place May Still Not Be Enough

Even reaching third place in Group F does not automatically send Egypt to Qatar.

Only the better of the two third-placed teams qualifies.

Group E currently has Guinea in third at 6-3, behind Cameroon and South Sudan, while Tunisia and Nigeria are both 5-4.

Egypt will therefore have to keep one eye on Group E throughout the final window.

If they manage to climb to third in their own group, their final record will then be compared with whoever finishes third in Group E to determine Africa’s fifth World Cup qualifier.

Egypt No Longer Control Their Fate Completely

Egypt left Dakar with one win and two defeats.

The victory over Senegal had reopened the qualification race, but losses to Côte d’Ivoire and particularly the two-point setback against DR Congo gave away much of that momentum.

The World Cup remains within reach, but Egypt no longer have the luxury of simply looking after their own results.

Their first task is to win as many of their final three games as possible — ideally all three. They must then hope Angola and Mali drop points while also monitoring the battle for third place in Group E.

The Senegal victory revived Egypt’s World Cup hopes. February will now determine whether those hopes survive all the way to Qatar 2027.
