Despite Financial Agreement, Release Clause Holds Up Mostafa Shobier’s Al Ahly Renewal

Negotiations between Al Ahly and goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier have become more complicated, with a release clause now emerging as the main point of disagreement between the two sides despite progress over the financial terms of a new contract.
Al Ahly want to keep Shobier at the club after his strong performances, but the goalkeeper also wants to protect his chance of moving to Europe in the future. That has turned the proposed release clause into the key issue in the talks.
According to the reports, Shobier asked for a clause that would allow him to leave for a foreign club if he receives a suitable offer. Some reports put the requested figure between $2 million and $3 million, while others specifically stated that he asked for a $2 million clause.
Al Ahly Reject Clause
Al Ahly's position is clear, as the club do not want to include a release clause that could allow the goalkeeper to leave under these terms.
The club believe accepting such a request could create a precedent and encourage other players to ask for similar clauses in their contracts.
At the same time, Al Ahly insist they are not against allowing players to move abroad. The club are prepared to discuss serious official offers when they believe the deal is suitable for both the player and the club.
The financial side of Shobier's new contract does not appear to be the main problem. One report said the proposed deal could see him earn EGP 25 million per year, in addition to around EGP 10 million in bonuses and incentives.
Shobier, however, wants to make sure that he has a clear route to Europe if a strong opportunity arrives in the future.
Reports said Italian side Como had previously shown interest in signing him, with an offer worth around $1.25 million. Al Ahly considered that amount too low compared with the goalkeeper's current value.
Shobier was also linked with Czech club Slavia Prague, strengthening his desire to keep the door open for a possible European move during his next contract.
El Shenawy Waits
If the talks remain unresolved, Al Ahly could make another change in goal, with captain Mohamed El Shenawy ready to play a bigger role.
Reports suggest the club may depend more heavily on El Shenawy's experience if Shobier does not agree to renew his contract without the requested clause.
El Shenawy has also performed well in recent training sessions and featured against Barcelona in the Joan Gamper Trophy, increasing his chances of returning to the starting lineup if the contract dispute continues.
Despite the disagreement, negotiations between Al Ahly and Shobier remain ongoing. The club want to keep the goalkeeper, while the player is trying to protect his ambition of playing in Europe.
The release clause is now the biggest obstacle to a final agreement after the two sides moved closer on the financial terms, making the next stage of negotiations important in deciding Shobier's future at Al Ahly.
