Abdelrahman Younes Wins Double Weightlifting Gold and Breaks Snatch World Record at Mediterranean Games

Egyptian weightlifter Abdelrahman Younes continued his impressive run at the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games after winning his second gold medal in the men's 85kg weightlifting competition.
Younes secured his second gold medal after another strong performance in the clean and jerk event, lifting 205kg to finish ahead of Libya's Mohamed Al-Sharif and confirm his dominance in the weight category.
Two Golds for Younes
The Egyptian weightlifter had already claimed gold in the snatch competition after successfully lifting 172kg.
Younes finished five kilograms ahead of his closest rival, Mohamed Al-Sharif, with reports from the competition also stating that his performance set a new world record.
The two victories gave Younes two gold medals from the 85kg events, making him one of Egypt's leading medal winners at this edition of the Mediterranean Games.
Egypt Reaches 44 Medals
Younes' latest victory helped raise Egypt's medal tally to 44, including 16 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze medals.
The results have kept Egypt among the countries competing for the leading positions in the medal standings, while also maintaining its place as the top Arab nation.
Egypt is competing in 23 sports at the Mediterranean Games, including weightlifting, handball, karate, judo, fencing, athletics, boxing, shooting, table tennis, volleyball and wrestling, as well as several other events.
The Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games are being held in Italy until September 3, with around 3,803 athletes from 26 countries taking part.
Egypt also has a strong history in the Mediterranean Games. The country sits sixth on the all-time medal table with 620 medals, including 156 gold, 209 silver and 255 bronze.
Younes' two gold medals provide another major boost for the Egyptian delegation in the final days of competition and underline the important role of weightlifting in Egypt's medal success at Taranto 2026.
