By Just One Kilo, Karim Abokahla Wins 95kg Clean and Jerk Gold at Mediterranean Games

Egyptian weightlifter Karim Kahla continued his strong run at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, winning two medals in the men's 95kg category. He claimed gold in the clean and jerk and bronze in the snatch, adding another major achievement to Egypt's medal total in the competition in Italy.
Gold and Bronze
Kahla delivered an impressive performance in the clean and jerk after successfully lifting 204kg, a result that secured first place and the gold medal following a very close battle.
Kosovo's Kianoush Rostami finished just one kilogram behind him after lifting 203kg to take silver, while Algeria's Fares Touiri earned bronze with a lift of 195kg.
The gold medal was not Kahla's only success in the 95kg category. He had already reached the podium in the snatch after lifting 164kg, which gave him third place and the bronze medal.
Algeria's Fares Touiri won the snatch gold after lifting 169kg, while Rostami finished second with 166kg to claim silver.
Kahla therefore completed his competition with two medals, making him one of Egypt's standout performers in weightlifting during the day.
Egypt Moves Forward
Kahla's medals helped raise Egypt's total at the Mediterranean Games to 56 medals, including 22 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze.
That total placed Egypt fifth in the overall medal table, while the Egyptian delegation remained the highest-ranked Arab nation in the competition.
Kahla's success was also part of a strong day for Egyptian athletes in Taranto, with medals coming from several different sports.
In weightlifting, Sara Samir also produced an excellent performance in the women's 77kg category. She won gold in the snatch with a 110kg lift before adding another gold in the clean and jerk after lifting 137kg.
Egypt also enjoyed success in karate. Taha Tarek won gold in the men's +84kg kumite event, while Youssef Badawy secured bronze in the -84kg category.
In gymnastics, Omar El-Shobaky earned silver in the pommel horse event, while Omar Mohamed El-Araby added another bronze medal for Egypt in the rings event.
Egypt is competing in 23 different sports at the Mediterranean Games, including athletics, boxing, gymnastics, judo, karate, handball, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, table tennis and shooting, alongside several other disciplines.
Egypt's strong performance in Taranto also continues its long history at the Mediterranean Games. According to the available figures, Egypt ranks sixth on the all-time medal list with 620 medals, including 156 gold, 209 silver and 255 bronze.
With the Games continuing until September 3, the performances of Karim Kahla and the rest of the Egyptian delegation have strengthened Egypt's position in Taranto and made the day one of the most successful for Egyptian sport at the 2026 Mediterranean Games.
