Historic 23-Gold Record: Egypt Finish Fifth at Mediterranean Games and First Among Arab Nations

Egypt concluded its participation in the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games in Italy with one of its best performances in the history of the competition, winning 58 medals to finish fifth overall and first among Arab nations.
The Egyptian delegation ended the Games with 23 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 19 bronze medals. The 23 gold medals represented Egypt's highest-ever gold medal total in a single edition of the Mediterranean Games.
Egypt also broke its previous record for the highest overall medal total in one edition. That record had been set at the Oran 2022 Mediterranean Games in Algeria, where Egypt won 51 medals, including 13 gold, 15 silver and 23 bronze.
Egypt finished fifth in the overall Taranto standings behind Italy, Turkey, Greece and France, while taking first place among Arab countries and confirming its strong position in Mediterranean Games history.
The Egyptian delegation competed in 23 different sports, including athletics, weightlifting, wrestling, karate, fencing, table tennis, judo, gymnastics, swimming, finswimming, boxing and handball, along with several other disciplines.
Record Haul
Finswimming provided Egypt's biggest medal total from a single sport, with 12 medals: four gold, four silver and four bronze.
Tarek Hassan won gold in the 100m monofin and 50m underwater events. Mohab Ehab took gold in the 400m monofin, while Ahmed Hesham Radwan won the 200m bi-fins title.
Egypt's silver medals came through Salma Rabie Raslan in the 50m bi-fins, Mariam Mohamed Helmy Hegab in the 50m underwater, Nada Magdy Hagras in the 400m monofin and Ahmed Awad in the 200m monofin.
Ahmed Hesham Radwan also claimed bronze in the 100m bi-fins, while Mohab Ehab won bronze in the 200m monofin. Egypt added two more bronze medals in the mixed 4x100m monofin relay and mixed 4x50m bi-fins relay.
Weightlifting was another major source of gold medals for Egypt, producing 10 medals in total, including seven gold, two silver and one bronze.
Sara Samir won gold in both the snatch and clean and jerk in the 77kg category. Abdelrahman Younes also completed a double by taking gold in the snatch and clean and jerk at 85kg.
Rovida Fathy won clean and jerk gold and snatch silver in the 69kg category. Nour El-Din Zaki earned snatch gold and clean and jerk silver at 65kg, while Karim Kahla completed the Egyptian weightlifting haul with clean and jerk gold and snatch bronze in the 95kg category.
Egyptian wrestling finished with seven medals: two gold, two silver and three bronze.
Mohamed Hassan won gold at 67kg and Samar Hamza took gold at 76kg. Mahmoud Farrag earned silver at 60kg, while Abdelrahman Haitham claimed silver in the 125kg category.
Mostafa Hussein won bronze at 77kg, Shehab El-Din Abdel Raouf took bronze at 65kg, and Mawada Badawy added another bronze medal in the 62kg division.
Medal Breakdown
Egypt's karate team also enjoyed a strong competition, winning five medals, including three gold and two bronze.
Feryal Ashraf won gold in the 68kg category, Rahma Tolba claimed the 61kg title, and Taha Tarek secured Egypt's third karate gold in the over-84kg division. Youssef Badawy won bronze at under 84kg, while Reem Ahmed Ramzy took bronze at 50kg.
Egypt added another five medals in fencing, with two gold, two silver and one bronze.
Mohamed El-Sayed won the men's épée gold medal, while Mohamed Hamza took gold in foil. Youssef Shamel claimed épée silver, Sara Amr Hosny won foil silver, and Abdelrahman Tolba added a foil bronze.
Table tennis also played an important part in Egypt's medal total, producing five medals: two gold and three silver.
The Egyptian women's team of Hana Goda, Dina Meshref, Mariam Alhodaby and Farah Abdel Aziz won the team gold medal, while Hana Goda also became the women's singles champion.
The men's team of Omar Assar, Youssef Abdel Aziz, Omar Badir and Badr Mostafa took silver. Omar Assar and Hana Goda won mixed doubles silver, while Youssef Abdel Aziz added another silver medal in the men's singles competition.
Egypt won four medals in judo. Omar El-Ramly claimed gold in the under-100kg category, while Abdelrahman Abdel Ghany won silver at 81kg. Hady Hussein took bronze in the over-100kg category, and Safa Soliman won bronze in the women's over-78kg division.
The Egyptian gymnastics team collected three medals. Omar El-Shabky won silver on the pommel horse, while Omar El-Araby earned bronze on the rings and another bronze in the individual all-around competition.
Egypt also won three medals in swimming. Abdelrahman Sameh took gold in the men's 50m butterfly, Farida Osman earned bronze in the women's 50m butterfly, and Youssef Ramadan claimed bronze in the 100m butterfly.
Boxing added two more medals to Egypt's total. Nabila Alaa El-Din won silver in the 75kg category, while Mohamed Hossam Abdel Moneim earned bronze in the under-90kg division.
One of Egypt's biggest moments of the Games came in men's handball, where the national team won the gold medal after defeating Greece 31-29 in the final. Egypt completed the tournament with a perfect winning record.
In athletics, Mohamed Magdy Hamza added a bronze medal in the shot put after recording a distance of 20.21 metres to finish third.
Following the end of Taranto 2026, Egypt increased its all-time Mediterranean Games medal total to 620 medals, including 156 gold, 209 silver and 255 bronze. The record keeps Egypt among the most successful nations in the history of the Games and the leading Arab country.
The 58-medal haul also reflects Egypt's progress across a wide range of individual and team sports. The delegation won seven more medals than at Oran 2022 and increased its number of gold medals from 13 to 23.
From the handball team's gold medal to the strong performances in weightlifting, finswimming, wrestling, karate, fencing and table tennis, Egypt ended Taranto 2026 with a historic campaign and one of its most successful Mediterranean Games appearances.
