Egypt’s women’s volleyball team continued its impressive run at the African Championship by booking a place in the final after a straight-sets victory over Rwanda, while also securing qualification for the 2027 World Championship.

Egypt controlled the semifinal from the start and built a comfortable advantage in the opening two sets. Rwanda offered much stronger resistance in the third, but Egypt stayed composed and completed the match without dropping a set.

The Egyptian team won the three sets 25-5, 25-17 and 32-30, extending its excellent run at the tournament in Kenya.

World Spot Secured

The victory over Rwanda was about much more than reaching the African Championship final, as it officially secured Egypt a place at the 2027 Women’s World Championship, which is set to be jointly hosted by the United States and Canada.

Egypt are also now only one match away from winning an African title that has been missing for more than two decades.

The Egyptian team has reached the continental final for the fifth time and for the second edition in a row.

Egypt last won the African title in 2003, also in Kenya, while the team finished as runners-up in the 2023 edition after losing 3-0 to Kenya in the final.

Egypt have won the African Championship three times, the same number of titles as Cameroon and Tunisia, while Kenya hold the record with 10 championships.

Egypt’s journey to the final has been impressive throughout the tournament, which runs from August 23 to September 5 with 16 national teams taking part.

Latest News

The team finished top of its group with a perfect record after victories over Burkina Faso, Senegal and Uganda.

Egypt then defeated Tunisia 3-1 in the quarterfinals before overcoming Rwanda in straight sets in the semifinal.

The result also extended Egypt’s winning run to 17 consecutive matches, underlining the strong form of the team heading into the biggest match of the tournament.

Olympic Dream

The African final offers Egypt more than just the chance to lift the continental trophy.

Winning the title would also secure Africa’s qualification place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, giving Egypt’s women’s volleyball team the opportunity to reach the Olympics for the first time in its history.

Egypt will face the winner of the semifinal between Kenya and Cameroon, with the final scheduled for Friday at 4:00 p.m.

The Egyptian team will be hoping to complete its unbeaten campaign by winning the title and turning an already successful tournament into a historic one.

Having already secured qualification for the World Championship, Egypt are now one victory away from combining an African title with a historic Olympic qualification.

A win in the final would therefore make the tournament in Kenya one of the most important chapters in the history of Egyptian women’s volleyball.
