Pyramids returned from Kenya with an important victory after beating Gor Mahia 2-0 in Nairobi, giving the Egyptian side a strong advantage ahead of the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie.

Pyramids produced a solid performance away from home. They survived a difficult opening to the match before taking control and scoring twice to put themselves in a comfortable position ahead of the return game.

Fast start

Gor Mahia started the match with early pressure and almost opened the scoring after only two minutes following a mistake by goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy. However, Ahmed Samy reacted quickly and cleared the ball before it crossed the goal line.

Pyramids responded almost immediately. Waleed El Karti opened the scoring in the fifth minute after following up a shot from Mostafa Fathi that the Gor Mahia goalkeeper failed to deal with cleanly.

The Egyptian side continued to create chances after taking the lead and made good use of the spaces in Gor Mahia's defence.

Mahmoud Saber then doubled the advantage with a powerful finish after Youssef Obama set up the opportunity.

The second goal gave Pyramids more control over the game, allowing them to manage the match calmly and protect their two-goal lead until the final whistle.

Concern for Marei

Despite the positive result, there was concern for Pyramids defender Mahmoud Marei after he suffered a strong blow to the head during a challenge with a Gor Mahia player.

Marei was unable to continue and was replaced by Iyad El Askalany. The Pyramids medical staff later decided to take him to a hospital in Nairobi for scans and further checks.

Marei was found to have suffered a deep cut to the head and underwent a minor surgical procedure at a Nairobi hospital, requiring eight stitches. Further checks and scans were carried out to assess his condition.

The 2-0 victory means Pyramids will return to Cairo with a valuable advantage before the second leg, which is scheduled to be played next week at the Air Defense Stadium.

A win or a draw of any score will send Pyramids through to the Round of 32, while they can also qualify even if they lose the return match by a one-goal margin.

Pyramids will now look to make full use of their away victory and complete the job in Cairo as they continue their campaign in the CAF Champions League.
