Egyptian taekwondo star Seif Eissa returned to the top of the world stage after winning the gold medal in the men's over-80kg category at the Taekwondo Grand Prix in South Korea, adding another major achievement to his career and creating a historic moment for Egyptian taekwondo.

Eissa's road to gold was far from easy. He faced a number of strong international opponents, but managed to win every match on his way to the final before defeating an Olympic champion to claim the title.

The achievement also came at an important point in Eissa's career. The Egyptian star made it clear that winning gold in Korea is not his final target. Instead, he sees it as the beginning of a bigger journey toward his main dream: winning Olympic gold at Los Angeles 2028.

Tough Road to Gold

Eissa opened his campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over the Tunisian champion before beating his Spanish opponent by the same score in the quarter-finals.

The semi-final brought a much tougher challenge against the Greek champion, who had previously eliminated the British silver medalist from the Paris 2024 Olympics. Eissa stayed composed and secured a 2-1 victory to reach the final.

Reaching the final also secured Eissa a place at the G10 Grand Prix Final, scheduled to take place in Kazakhstan in November 2026. The event is an important stop in the international season, with the champion earning 100 valuable ranking points.

Eissa will join fellow Egyptian Jana Khattab at the Grand Prix Final after she booked her place by winning silver at the Grand Prix event in Rome in June 2026.

In the final, Eissa completed his impressive run by defeating Russia's Vladislav Larin, an Olympic gold medalist, 2-0 to secure the title after four consecutive victories.

The quality of his final opponent made the achievement even more impressive. Larin had reached the final after overcoming an Iranian Paris 2024 Olympic champion, but Eissa stopped his run and took the gold medal back to Egypt.

The result also carried historic importance, as it became Egypt's first men's gold medal in Grand Prix history. Hedaya Malak had previously won a women's Grand Prix gold medal in Mexico in 2015.

Los Angeles Is the Dream

Following his triumph, Eissa stressed that the result was the product of hard work, long training sessions and serious preparation rather than a sudden success.

For the Egyptian champion, the Korea gold medal marks the start of another stage rather than the end of the journey. His biggest target is now to compete for Olympic gold at Los Angeles 2028.

Eissa already has major Olympic experience after winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Games, in addition to a long list of African and international achievements.

His international success began early when he claimed bronze at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. He later added African Games gold and titles at the World Military Championship, Mediterranean Games and World Team Cup.

The Egyptian star also reached world No.1 in the taekwondo rankings in 2017 and has remained among the sport's leading international athletes during his career.

His return to the top of the podium in South Korea sends a strong message ahead of the next stage, with international competitions and ranking points playing an important role in his preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Between a historic gold medal in Korea and an even bigger target waiting in the United States, Eissa is beginning a new chapter in his career with one clear ambition: turning his Tokyo bronze into Olympic gold in Los Angeles.
