Al Ahly have suffered a major early-season blow after medical tests confirmed that new defender Amr El Gazar has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament tear, along with a tear in the medial meniscus.

Dr. Ahmed Gaballah, Al Ahly’s first-team doctor, revealed the full diagnosis after the player underwent medical scans and examinations to determine the exact nature of his knee injury.

Concerns had grown after El Gazar complained of a knee problem, before the scans confirmed the seriousness of the injury and ruled him out of the team’s plans for the coming period.

Al Ahly confirmed that El Gazar has suffered an ACL tear as well as a tear in the medial meniscus, meaning the defender will need surgery before beginning his treatment and rehabilitation program.

The club’s medical team is currently working to set a date for the operation. After surgery, a full recovery plan will be prepared according to the player’s condition and progress.

The timing is especially difficult for El Gazar, who only joined Al Ahly during the latest summer transfer window and was hoping to quickly establish himself in the squad and compete for regular playing time.

Instead, the defender now faces a period away from competitive action before gradually starting his return following surgery and rehabilitation.

El Gazar’s injury also creates another challenge for head coach Hussein Ammouta, who is trying to keep his squad fully prepared during a demanding period of the season.

Ammouta has been using friendly matches to give playing time to substitutes and players who do not feature regularly in official games.

As part of that plan, Al Ahly are playing a friendly against Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi, with the match designed to prepare players who either did not start or played limited minutes against Arab Contractors.

The friendly comes after Al Ahly were held to a 1-1 draw by Arab Contractors in the Egyptian Premier League, marking the team’s first dropped points under Ammouta.

Al Ahly are now preparing for their next match against Abu Qir Fertilizers, while El Gazar will remain unavailable as he waits for the date of his surgery and the beginning of his recovery program.

The injury has turned the defender’s first weeks at Al Ahly into a difficult test before he has had a full opportunity to prove himself in the red shirt. His focus will now shift toward completing his treatment and returning to the pitch in the best possible condition.
