Dina Meshref continued her impressive run at the WTT Champions tournament in Macao after booking her place in the women’s singles quarterfinals, while fellow Egyptian Hana Goda saw her campaign come to an end following a tough five-game battle against world No. 7 Chen Xingtong of China.

Friday's matches produced another strong Egyptian showing in a tournament featuring some of the world's leading players. Meshref extended her excellent run of results, while Goda came close to producing another major upset before eventually losing after five competitive games.

Meshref Reaches Quarterfinals

Dina Meshref secured her place in the quarterfinals after defeating American star Lily Zhang, who is of Chinese descent, in straight games in the round of 16.

Meshref started the match with confidence and controlled much of the contest, winning 11-8, 11-3 and 17-15.

The Egyptian was particularly dominant in the opening two games before facing much stronger resistance in the third. Zhang pushed Meshref deep into the game, but the Egyptian remained composed and eventually closed it out 17-15 to complete a 3-0 victory.

The win over Zhang was not Meshref's only major result in Macao.

In the previous round, she produced one of the tournament's biggest surprises by defeating China's Wang Yidi, the world No. 5, by three games to one.

That victory underlined Meshref's excellent form and made her only the second Egyptian woman to defeat a Chinese player on the WTT circuit, following her national teammate Hana Goda.

Goda had become the first Egyptian player to achieve that feat when she defeated Chen Xingtong at the WTT event in Montpellier, France, in 2024.

Meshref will now face another major Chinese challenge in the quarterfinals, with Chen Xingtong standing between the Egyptian star and a place in the semifinals.

Goda Bows Out

Hana Goda's run in Macao ended after a closely contested match against China's Chen Xingtong, the world No. 7.

Goda pushed one of the world's leading players all the way to the fifth game but was eventually beaten 3-2, allowing Chen to advance to the quarterfinals.

Despite the defeat, Goda delivered a strong performance against a highly experienced opponent and came close to setting up an all-Egyptian quarterfinal against Meshref.

However, Chen's victory ended that possibility and instead created another difficult Egyptian-Chinese showdown in the next round.

Meshref will enter the quarterfinal with plenty of confidence after defeating the world No. 5 and then recording a straight-games victory over Lily Zhang.

Her next challenge, however, is expected to be even tougher against a player who has just survived a demanding five-game match against Goda.

The WTT Champions event in Macao runs from September 8 to 13 and features several of the world's top-ranked players. Egypt has been represented by Omar Assar in the men's competition, along with Meshref and Goda in the women's draw.

With Goda now out of the tournament, Egyptian hopes turn to Meshref, who is only one victory away from reaching the semifinals after already producing one of the standout Egyptian performances of the competition.
