Al Ahly are preparing to begin their CAF Confederation Cup campaign after their opponent in the Round of 32 was officially confirmed, with Uganda’s Kitara FC booking their place following a convincing victory over Somalia’s Mogadishu City.

Kitara secured qualification after defeating Mogadishu City 2-0 on Saturday at Hoima Stadium in Uganda in the second leg, adding to their 2-1 victory from the first meeting.

The Ugandan side therefore advanced with a 4-1 aggregate victory, setting up a continental showdown with Al Ahly for a place in the group stage.

Kitara Secure Qualification

Kitara entered the second leg with an advantage from their away victory, but they did not simply try to protect the result and instead looked to confirm qualification in front of their supporters.

Jimmy Kalema opened the scoring in the 30th minute after reacting quickly to a shot that came back off the post inside the penalty area.

Frank Zaga then doubled Kitara’s lead in the 61st minute, receiving a headed pass inside the box before finishing successfully past the Mogadishu City goalkeeper.

The result officially confirmed Kitara as Al Ahly’s opponent in the Round of 32, with the winner over the two legs advancing to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

Kitara are competing in the tournament as Uganda Cup champions, while Mogadishu City qualified after winning the 2026 Somali Cup.

This is only Kitara’s second appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup following their previous participation in the 2024-25 season. They have now also reached the second preliminary round for the first time in the club’s history.

Al Ahly Enter in Round of 32

Al Ahly will begin their Confederation Cup campaign directly from the Round of 32 after being exempted from the opening preliminary round due to their position among Africa’s top-ranked clubs.

The Cairo giants are taking part in the competition this season after finishing third in the Egyptian Premier League last season and will be hoping to make a strong run in the continental tournament.

The first leg against Kitara is expected to be played in Uganda on October 16, 17 or 18, while Al Ahly will host the return match in Cairo on October 23, 24 or 25.

The final dates are expected to be officially confirmed later, with the team that wins on aggregate advancing directly to the group stage.

Al Ahly have a special history with the CAF Confederation Cup, having won the competition once in 2014 after defeating Ivory Coast’s Sewe Sport in a dramatic final that remains memorable for the club’s supporters.

The Egyptian side will now be looking for a strong start to their latest continental campaign, although Kitara will arrive with confidence after winning both legs against Mogadishu City.

With the tie now confirmed, attention turns to October, when Al Ahly will begin their African journey in Uganda before hosting the decisive second leg in Cairo, with a place in the group stage at stake.
