Al Ahly continued their positive start to the Egyptian Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Abu Qir Fertilizers at Cairo International Stadium in the fifth round of the 2026-27 campaign.

The scoreline may look comfortable, but the match was far from easy for Al Ahly. Abu Qir remained in contention until the final minutes and came close to equalising before Hussein El Shahat produced a powerful late strike to secure all three points.

The victory was Al Ahly's fourth win in five league matches, alongside one draw, taking their tally to 13 points and moving them temporarily to the top of the table while the remaining fixtures of the round are completed.

Zizo Opens the Door

Al Ahly started the match looking to take control early and tried to attack through the wide areas while moving the ball quickly through midfield.

Karim Fouad had one of the first attempts with a shot that went wide, before Al Ahly gradually increased the pressure on Abu Qir's defence.

In the 16th minute, Ahmed Sayed Zizo turned Al Ahly's early advantage into the opening goal. He received the ball inside the penalty area, went past Genesh and calmly finished into the net.

A quick attacking move involving several Al Ahly players ended with the ball reaching Zizo inside the penalty area. He managed to get past goalkeeper Mahmoud Abdel Rahim "Genesh" before finishing into the net.

The goal gave Al Ahly an early advantage, but it did not give them full control of the match.

Sofiane Benjdida later tested Genesh with a powerful effort, while Achraf Bencharki was also involved in several attacking moves, but the Abu Qir goalkeeper kept the deficit at one goal.

Abu Qir gradually became more dangerous after falling behind and tried to make use of misplaced passes and Al Ahly's slow transition at times.

The visitors created a number of threatening situations, but Mohamed El Shenawy was alert whenever he was called into action.

Despite taking the lead, Al Ahly did not completely control the first half. Their build-up was slow in several periods, while the midfield struggled to dominate the game consistently.

The first half ended with Al Ahly leading 1-0, but the match remained open.

The hosts pushed for a second goal after the break to avoid a nervous finish.

Benjdida had another effort saved by Genesh, before Marwan Attia also tried to take advantage of the loose ball.

Zizo then produced one of the most eye-catching moments of the game with an overhead-kick attempt, only for Genesh to make another important save.

Abu Qir, however, refused to give up and continued searching for an equaliser.

Their biggest opportunity came when Youssef Hamdy connected with a cross and sent a header against El Shenawy's post.

It was a major warning for Al Ahly and a moment that could have completely changed the game.

El Shahat Seals It

With the score still 1-0, Al Ahly coach Hussein Ammouta turned to his bench in an attempt to add more energy to the team.

Hussein El Shahat, Ahmed Reda and Moncef Bekrar were introduced, replacing Emam Ashour, Omar El Saai and Achraf Bencharki.

Mohamed Magdy Afsha and Taher Mohamed Taher also joined the action later as Al Ahly looked to take advantage of the spaces left by Abu Qir while the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Bekrar had a major opportunity to finish the match in stoppage time when he found himself through on goal, but Genesh made the save.

Abu Qir's resistance did not last much longer.

El Shahat, who had started the game on the bench, found space outside the penalty area and fired a superb long-range effort into the upper part of the net to secure the victory for Al Ahly in stoppage time.

The goal ended a nervous period for the hosts and finally killed off Abu Qir's hopes of taking anything from the match.

Zizo was named Man of the Match after scoring the opening goal and remaining one of Al Ahly's biggest attacking threats throughout his time on the pitch.

The result moved Al Ahly to 13 points from five matches after four victories and one draw. They have scored eight goals and conceded three.

Abu Qir, meanwhile, remained on three points after one win and four defeats, leaving them near the bottom of the standings.

Beyond the three points, the match also showed areas Al Ahly still need to improve.

Their passing speed and ball movement were not always sharp, while Abu Qir managed to create dangerous moments and were only denied an equaliser by the post in the second half.

Still, Al Ahly achieved their main objective.

Zizo provided the breakthrough, El Shahat delivered the final blow, and Ammouta's side left Cairo International Stadium with another victory and temporary control of the top spot.
