Zamalek’s dispute with former player and Egypt volleyball international Mariam Metwally has entered a new stage after the club officially filed a complaint with the Egyptian Volleyball Federation, seeking to collect a contractual penalty worth EGP 1 million.

The dispute dates back to last season, when Zamalek agreed to allow Metwally to pursue a professional opportunity outside Egypt. The agreement set out the rights and obligations of both sides, including conditions related to the player’s return to the club following her overseas experience.

While Metwally chose to continue her professional career abroad, Zamalek believes that her decision conflicts with the terms of the agreement. The club has therefore taken official action in an attempt to enforce the financial clause included in the deal.

From Italy to a One Million Pound Dispute

The story began when Zamalek approved Metwally’s move to Italy, giving the player the opportunity to continue her career outside the Egyptian league.

Under the agreement, Metwally waived financial dues owed to her by the club, estimated at around EGP 635,000, in exchange for permission to pursue the overseas move. The deal also included a condition concerning her future with Zamalek after her professional experience abroad.

The agreement reportedly included a penalty clause worth EGP 1 million per season if the player failed to return to Zamalek during the following two seasons. That clause has now become the main point of disagreement between the two sides.

After her spell in Italy, Metwally decided to continue her career abroad and recently joined Azerbaijani club Moomina Khatun on a one-season deal. Her move allowed her to remain in overseas competition instead of returning to Zamalek.

With the player continuing her career outside Egypt, Zamalek considers the contractual penalty applicable and has therefore filed an official complaint seeking the EGP 1 million payment.

However, the dispute is no longer limited to the wording of the agreement, as an administrative issue has also emerged and could play an important role in determining the outcome.

Contract Registration Puts Volleyball Federation Under Pressure

One of the key issues now being examined is the reported failure to register Metwally’s contract with the Egyptian Volleyball Federation within the required timeframe.

This point is important because Zamalek is relying on its agreement with Metwally to claim the EGP 1 million penalty. At the same time, the federation must determine whether the agreement and its registration procedures complied with the regulations governing player contracts and overseas transfers.

As a result, the penalty clause has not yet been definitively confirmed. The Egyptian Volleyball Federation is currently reviewing the documents submitted by both Zamalek and the player, while examining the details of the agreement and the procedures surrounding its registration.

The review is intended to determine whether the agreement met the regulatory requirements needed for its clauses to be enforced, or whether the registration issue could affect Zamalek’s ability to collect the financial penalty.

The final decision now rests with the Egyptian Volleyball Federation, which will determine, after reviewing the documents, whether Zamalek is entitled to receive the EGP 1 million penalty.

Meanwhile, Mariam Metwally continues her professional career outside Egypt, while Zamalek awaits an official ruling on its complaint. The dispute will remain unresolved until the federation reaches a final decision on the agreement and the penalty clause.
