Al Ahly have taken strong disciplinary action against first-team basketball player Amr Zahran following the incident that occurred during the game against Al Qanah in the Egyptian Basketball Associated League.

The club announced a six-month suspension for Zahran, in addition to a 50% deduction from the value of his contract, following his behavior toward an opposing player during the match.

Al Ahly's decision came after the Egyptian Basketball Federation had already announced its own punishment over the same incident, with the club choosing to impose a stronger internal penalty on its player.

Stronger Club Punishment

Al Ahly explained that the decision was based on the club's principles and its commitment to maintaining respect between all members of the sporting community.

The club made it clear that it would not accept behavior that goes beyond the expected standards of conduct during sporting competitions.

As a result, Al Ahly decided to suspend Zahran for six months and deduct half of the value of his contract.

Earlier, the Egyptian Basketball Federation had suspended Zahran for three months, with the suspension running until the end of the Associated League competition.

The federation also imposed a fine of EGP 200,000 and issued a final warning to the player following an investigation into the incident.

The disciplinary decisions came after the federation investigated the events of the Al Ahly-Al Qanah game and heard from the parties involved before announcing its ruling.

Al Ahly won the game 82-62 in the second round of the competition, but the incident involving Zahran became the main talking point after the match and later led to disciplinary action.

Despite imposing a stronger punishment on its own player, Al Ahly also expressed concerns over the Egyptian Basketball Federation's disciplinary process.

The club stressed that its objection was not about whether Zahran should be punished, as Al Ahly itself had already taken tougher action against him.

Instead, the club questioned what it described as the lack of clear and consistent standards in disciplinary decisions.

Al Ahly believes that penalties should be based on clearly defined regulations that apply equally to all clubs and players, especially when dealing with similar incidents.

The club added that consistent rules are important for protecting competition and supporting the development of Egyptian basketball.

Zahran is therefore facing two separate punishments following the Al Qanah incident.

The Egyptian Basketball Federation suspended him for three months and fined him EGP 200,000, while Al Ahly imposed an internal six-month suspension and deducted 50% of the value of his contract.

Al Ahly's position sends two messages: the club strongly rejects the conduct of its player and has imposed a major punishment, while at the same time calling for clearer and more consistent disciplinary rules across Egyptian basketball.
