A New Era at Pyramids FC.. Mokwena Takes Charge After Juričić's Departure

In a decision that reflects Pyramids FC’s desire to reshape its technical project, the Egyptian club officially appointed South African coach Rulani Mokwena as the new head coach of the first team, succeeding Croatian manager Krunoslav Juričić.
The appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Sky Blues, with a young coach who has already built extensive experience in African football taking charge of the team.
Mokwena’s arrival came just hours after Pyramids FC ended its association with Juričić, who had been in charge since February 2024 and led the team through a successful period before his departure at the end of last season.
The South African coach wasted no time in beginning his new mission, taking charge of his first training session with the team at the Air Defense Stadium.
The session marked his first appearance in front of the players and was preceded by a video meeting during which the training program and preparations for the upcoming season were outlined.
Mokwena began his tenure amid a warm welcome from the players, as the squad prepares for a new phase of preseason training ahead of an overseas training camp, details of which will be announced later.
Mokwena.. A Choice That Sends a Clear Message
Pyramids FC’s decision to appoint Rulani Mokwena appears to be more than just a change in the head coach’s position. It reflects the club’s desire to introduce new ideas while maintaining the foundations of the project built over recent years.
At 39, Mokwena has already established an impressive coaching résumé despite his relatively young age.
He made his name at Mamelodi Sundowns before taking on different challenges with Wydad AC, Al-Ittihad of Libya, and MC Alger, gaining valuable experience across the diverse football environments of both North and Southern Africa.
Throughout his coaching career, Mokwena has won several major titles, including four South African league championships with Sundowns, the inaugural African Football League title, and the Algerian Super Cup during his time with MC Alger.
These achievements have established him as one of the continent’s most promising young coaches, leading Pyramids FC to entrust him with a team that has ambitious goals both domestically and in African competitions.
A Coaching Staff Combining Trust and Continuity
Mokwena is expected to bring several members of his coaching staff with him, including an assistant coach and a goalkeeping coach, highlighting his desire to continue working with members of his trusted team.
At the same time, Pyramids FC’s management has decided to retain Mohamed Nagy “Gedo” as part of the new coaching setup, while the medical and administrative staffs will also remain in place.
The approach is designed to strike a balance between introducing the new coach’s ideas and maintaining the continuity provided by staff members who already have a deep understanding of the club and its players.
The End of One Era and the Beginning of Another
Before announcing Mokwena’s appointment, Pyramids FC officially thanked Krunoslav Juričić and his coaching staff for their efforts during their time at the club.
With Juričić’s departure, Pyramids FC closes an important chapter in its history and opens the door to a new project led by a coach known for his attacking philosophy and ambition.
However, Mokwena faces a major challenge: maintaining Pyramids FC’s position among the leading clubs in Egyptian and African football while turning the club’s ambitions into tangible success.
Now, the real test begins. Mokwena’s success will not be measured solely by the ideas he brings to training, but by his ability to transform Pyramids FC’s ambitions into trophies and make this coaching change the beginning of a new era of achievement rather than simply another change on the touchline.
