Egypt's youth handball team were crowned African champions for the 15th time in their history after completing an impressive comeback to beat Tunisia 31-29 in the final.

The 33rd edition of the African Youth Handball Championship was held in Côte d'Ivoire from September 5 to 12, with Egypt producing a perfect run before ending the tournament with a dramatic victory over Tunisia.

Egypt Fight Back

Tunisia started the final strongly and controlled much of the first half, taking a 14-11 lead into the break and putting Egypt under pressure.

However, Egypt returned for the second half with a much stronger performance.

The young Pharaohs gradually reduced the gap before turning the match around and taking the lead during the decisive stages of the game.

Egypt stayed composed in the closing minutes and secured a 31-29 victory to lift the African trophy for the 15th time.

The achievement also continued Egypt's dominance of the competition, with the national team winning the title for the fourth consecutive edition and extending its record as the most successful team in the tournament's history.

Egypt had been impressive from the start of the championship and finished the group stage with three wins from three matches.

They opened their campaign with a dominant 38-15 victory over DR Congo before beating Congo Brazzaville 42-19.

Egypt then completed the group stage with another comfortable win, defeating Cameroon 30-18.

In the quarter-finals, the young Pharaohs continued their strong run with a 40-15 victory over Libya to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Egypt delivered another dominant performance in the last four, defeating Angola 37-10 and booking a place in the final against Tunisia.

Despite trailing 14-11 at half-time in the final, Egypt responded brilliantly after the break and completed the comeback with a 31-29 win.

Following their African success, Egypt are expected to compete at the 2027 Men's Junior World Handball Championship in North Macedonia, scheduled to take place from June 23 to July 4.

Egypt also have a strong record at world youth level. They won the world title in 1993 and finished third in both the 1999 and 2019 editions.

The latest African title adds another major achievement to Egyptian handball, with a new generation of players showing their quality throughout the tournament and proving their strength when it mattered most in the final.
