Egypt’s men’s volleyball team has started a new chapter in its continental campaign after arriving in Tunisia to compete in the 2026 African Championship, with the team aiming to challenge for the title and take another important step toward its future international goals.

The Egyptian delegation left Cairo on Sunday morning before arriving in Tunisia, where the players will now turn their full attention to the tournament.

The African Championship is an important part of Egypt’s plans for the coming period, especially with the 2027 Men’s World Championship and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games among the team’s major future targets.

The tournament had initially been scheduled to take place in Congo before being moved to Tunisia, according to Egyptian reports, because of developments related to the Ebola virus.

The technical meeting is expected to take place on Monday, September 14, when the final tournament arrangements and draw will be completed. The competition is then scheduled to officially begin on Tuesday, September 15.

Egypt Squad

Egypt’s technical staff selected 14 players for the tournament.

Captain Reda Haikal leads the squad alongside Ahmed Ezzab, Yassin Mohamed, Mostafa Gaber, Ahmed Said, Abdelrahman El-Husseiny, Mohamed Asran, Ahmed Diaa, Mohamed Adel, Hamada Othman, Shehab El-Din Nabil, Ahmed Youssef, Mohamed Reda and Hazem Kamal.

Ahmed Samir leads the national team as head coach, with Mohamed Refaat working as assistant coach and Ahmed El-Nabawy serving as technical analyst.

The staff also includes Sameh Zalam as rehabilitation and injury specialist, Bilal Morsi as fitness planner and Omar Khalifa as team administrator, while Walid El-Khashen joins the delegation as the accompanying referee.

Egyptian Volleyball Federation president Yasser Kamar heads the delegation in Tunisia as the federation looks to provide full support to the team during one of its most important competitions of the season.

Egypt will compete against several African teams, including host nation Tunisia, as well as Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Chad, Central African Republic, DR Congo and Gambia.

The Egyptian team prepared for the tournament through a number of training sessions and warm-up matches, including a friendly against Algeria, as the coaching staff worked to improve the players’ readiness before the continental competition.

Title Dream

Egypt are not travelling to Tunisia simply to take part in the tournament. The main target is to compete strongly for the African title and return to the continental podium.

The championship also has extra importance because it comes during a key period in Egypt’s long-term plans ahead of the 2027 World Championship and the push toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The coaching staff will hope to use the experience of several key players, along with the strong focus inside the squad, to maintain a consistent level throughout the tournament and deal with the difficult competition expected from Africa’s leading teams.

Egyptian volleyball fans will now be waiting for the Pharaohs’ opening appearance in Tunisia, hoping the team can make a strong start and move step by step toward the decisive stages of the championship.

With the delegation now in Tunisia, the preparation stage is over and the countdown to the competition has begun.

The target is clear for Egypt: fight for the African title and take another important step in a bigger journey toward the World Championship and the dream of reaching Los Angeles 2028.
