Egyptian handball added another continental achievement after the Egypt U18 national team won the 2026 African Championship, defeating Tunisia 28-25 in the final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Egypt reached the final after an impressive run throughout the tournament and completed their campaign with another victory against one of Africa’s strongest handball nations.

The Egyptian side finished the first half with a 13-10 lead and managed to stay in control during the second half despite Tunisia’s attempts to close the gap.

Egypt handled the key moments well and eventually secured a 28-25 victory to become African champions in the 22nd edition of the competition.

Strong road to gold

Egypt’s title was the result of an excellent campaign throughout the tournament, which was held in Côte d’Ivoire from September 15 to 22.

The young Pharaohs opened their campaign with a dominant 51-21 victory over Congo before continuing their strong form with a 35-17 win against Cameroon.

In the knockout stage, Egypt defeated Nigeria 55-21 in the quarter-finals to set up a semi-final meeting with Morocco.

Egypt then produced one of their most impressive performances of the tournament, beating Morocco 44-12 to book a deserved place in the final.

The match against Tunisia was a much tougher test. Unlike Egypt’s earlier games, the final remained competitive for longer, but the Egyptian players stayed composed and protected their advantage until the final whistle.

A new generation lifts the trophy

Egypt won the title under head coach Mohamed Ibrahim, the former Al Ahly and Egypt national team player, who guided a talented group of young players through an unbeaten continental campaign.

The squad included goalkeepers Ibrahim Mohamed, Abdelmalek Mahmoud and Mohamed Rami.

Anas Doais and Yassin Ahmed Fathy featured on the left wing, while Mahmoud Radi, Seif Allah Amr and Moamen El-Nakib played at left back.

Zein Abdel Warith and Moaz El-Sayed were selected as playmakers, with Yassin Saad, Mohamed Walid El-Sheikh and Youssef Amr occupying the right-back positions.

Hamza Sami Sima and Yassin Khaled Hamido featured on the right wing, while Abdelrahman Bakr, Amir El-Sharkawy and Adam Galal were included as line players.

Egypt’s results throughout the tournament showed their attacking strength, with the team scoring heavily in most matches before facing a much closer contest against Tunisia in the final.

Winning that difficult final gave the achievement even more value, as the players showed that they could not only dominate matches but also manage pressure when the title was on the line.

The championship gives Egyptian handball another continental trophy and introduces a new generation of players capable of continuing Egypt’s strong presence in African handball in the coming years.
