Abdullah Hassouna, a member of Egypt’s Greco-Roman wrestling team, claimed gold in the 55kg category at the African Wrestling Championship in Alexandria, following a dramatic final against his Tunisian opponent.

‘Golden Deception’ Decides the Final

Competing in his first African Championship, Hassouna showcased impressive composure and technical ability throughout the tournament. In the final, he delivered a decisive moment that ultimately secured the title.

At a crucial stage of the match, Hassouna appeared to surrender as his opponent lifted him to execute a throw. Instead, he executed a quick counter, catching his opponent off guard and pinning him to the mat in a move later described as the “Golden Deception.”

Speaking after the match, Hassouna said:

“I practiced this move a lot as part of my preparation. I was ready for that situation and knew how to respond.”

He added that the victory would serve as strong motivation ahead of future competitions.

Strong Showing for Egypt

Hassouna’s gold was part of a wider positive showing for Egypt at the championship, with several athletes delivering strong performances across different categories.

Egypt’s U17 women’s team also finished top of the overall standings, winning five gold and four silver medals, underlining the country’s growing strength in wrestling at the continental level.

Looking Ahead

Hassouna now turns his focus to upcoming international competitions, with ambitions of building on this success at the World Championships.
