ZED Holds on to African Dream.. Confederation Cup Battle Heats Up Amid Controversy Over Slot Allocation

Amid the ongoing controversy over the identity of Egyptian clubs set to participate in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup, ZED FC has taken a firm official stance, reaffirming its full commitment to securing its rightful place on the continental stage, while awaiting the final decision from the Egyptian Football Association regarding the allocation of slots.
Slot Allocation Crisis Between Regulations and Local Interpretations
The crisis escalated after Pyramids FC were crowned Egypt Cup champions at the expense of ZED in the final, a result that reopened the debate over African qualification places. This comes amid Pyramids also being heavily involved in the domestic league title race, with the possibility of securing a CAF Champions League spot.
According to Confederation of African Football (CAF) regulations, the Confederation Cup place allocated through the cup competition may be transferred to the runner-up if the winner has already secured qualification for the Champions League via the league standings. This scenario opens the door for ZED to potentially earn a historic first-ever continental appearance.
However, conflicting interpretations within the domestic football scene have intensified the dispute, particularly after reports suggested that Confederation Cup slots could instead be allocated strictly based on league standings, further fueling controversy among the involved clubs.
ZED Holds Its Right and Awaits the Federation’s Decision
In response, ZED issued an official statement emphasizing its full commitment to both domestic and continental regulations, stressing that it will abide by all rules regardless of the final decision. The club also expressed satisfaction with its season performance in both the league and Egypt Cup, considering it part of a long-term sporting project.
ZED also extended congratulations to Pyramids FC for winning the Egypt Cup, highlighting respect for fair competition and acknowledging the strong level shown in the final between both sides.
At the same time, the club sought to ease tensions with other teams, particularly Ceramica Cleopatra FC, reaffirming its respect for existing investment-based relationships and cooperation within Egyptian football.
The situation remains open, with all eyes now on the official decision from the Egyptian Football Association, which will determine Egypt’s representatives in the Confederation Cup. ZED continues to view itself as a direct stakeholder in the qualification equation and insists on strict application of regulations without exceptions or conflicting interpretations.
Between league calculations, cup outcomes, and CAF regulations, one key question remains: who will ultimately secure Egypt’s two Confederation Cup spots?
