Algeria Keep Their Dream Alive... Could a World Cup Clash with Egypt Be Next?

Algeria secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Jordan in the second round of Group J at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in a match that appeared to be slipping away from the Desert Warriors before a late turnaround changed everything. The win revived Algeria’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage, while officially ending Jordan’s chances of progressing.
Jordan Close In, Algeria Turn the Tide
Despite enjoying more possession in the first half, Algeria struggled to break down a disciplined Jordanian side that combined tactical organization with dangerous counterattacks. Jordan capitalized on a defensive mistake, allowing Nizar Al Rashdan to put Al Nashama ahead before the break.
Algeria's problems grew as several clear chances went begging, including opportunities for Riyad Mahrez and Amine Gouiri. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila produced a series of impressive saves to keep Jordan in front. At that stage, Jordan looked on course for a historic World Cup result thanks to their confidence and determination against one of Africa’s strongest teams.
Petkovic Changes the Game, Gouiri Delivers the Winner
At the start of the second half, coach Vladimir Petkovic made key substitutions that transformed Algeria’s performance. The Desert Warriors increased the pressure and eventually found an equalizer through substitute Nadhir Benbouali, whose header brought the match back to level terms.
With momentum now fully on Algeria’s side, the decisive moment arrived when Amine Gouiri took advantage of a defensive scramble inside the penalty area and scored the winning goal late in the game.
The victory keeps Algeria firmly in the race for qualification ahead of a decisive final group match against Austria. Jordan, meanwhile, may be out of the tournament, but they leave with their heads held high after delivering a spirited performance in their historic World Cup campaign.
For now, both teams have more immediate concerns. Egypt must finish the job against Iran, while Algeria still need a result against Austria to keep their qualification hopes alive. But with the expanded World Cup format creating new knockout paths, the prospect of an Egypt-Algeria showdown remains one of the most intriguing possibilities on the road to the Round of 32.
