Europe Before the Gulf… Abdel Meguid Chooses the Dream

Hossam Abdel Meguid views his new experience with Ludogorets not as a final destination, but as the first step in a bigger plan for his career. The defender is targeting a move to a higher level within a year or a year and a half, once he proves himself in European football and demonstrates his ability to compete outside Egypt.

His choice of the Bulgarian club was not random. The player believes that Ludogorets’ sporting project offers him the right environment to develop, particularly given the club’s strong domestic record and its participation in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Conference League next season.

Although the Gulf offers received by Abdel Meguid were financially more lucrative, the defender decided not to simply follow the highest-paying offer. Instead, he chose the path he believes can eventually lead him to stronger and more prominent European leagues.

Reports indicated that one of the Gulf offers was worth four times what he will earn at Ludogorets. However, his desire to build a career in European football led him to turn down the financial temptation and prioritize sporting development.

Other European clubs were also interested in the Egyptian defender, including CFR Cluj, but Ludogorets emerged as the most serious and closest option to completing the deal.

The 2030 Dream Starts at Ludogorets

Contrary to what might initially appear, Hossam Abdel Meguid’s move to Ludogorets was not a direct result of his participation with Egypt at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Interest in the player and negotiations had already begun well before the tournament.

During the World Cup, the defender was not a regular starter for Egypt, and he believes that a greater role in the tournament could have changed the nature of the offers he received.

Nevertheless, Abdel Meguid does not view that as an obstacle. Instead, he has set himself a clear objective: work hard to establish himself as a regular starter for the Egyptian national team and continue developing so that he can play a more influential role with the Pharaohs at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Hossam Abdel Meguid’s departure is more than just a transfer from one club to another. The move carries special significance for him as one of Zamalek’s own, having progressed through the club’s youth ranks.

After being promoted to the first team in 2019, the defender made 171 appearances for Zamalek, scoring 15 goals and providing one assist. During his time with the club, he won three Egyptian league titles, two Egypt Cups, the CAF Super Cup, and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Now, Abdel Meguid hopes that his new experience will be more than a personal success. He also wants to help open the door for other Zamalek players to pursue professional careers in Europe, believing that his success could inspire younger teammates to dream of playing abroad.

Zamalek received €1.5 million for the player’s transfer to Ludogorets, with additional bonuses of up to €300,000 linked to the Bulgarian club winning domestic titles or participating in European competitions.

Abdel Meguid therefore leaves Zamalek after years of development within the club, but he is not leaving simply in pursuit of money. He carries a bigger ambition with him: to prove himself in Europe, reach a stronger league, return to the national team in a more influential role, and help pave the way for a new generation of Zamalek players to pursue European careers.

In the end, Hossam Abdel Meguid chose what may be the more difficult and slower path. But in his view, it could offer something greater than a higher salary in the present: the opportunity to build a genuine name for himself in European football.
