Why Did Salah Choose Trabzonspor? Between Money and European Ambition

After years at the summit of European football with Liverpool, Mohamed Salah has chosen to begin a new chapter of his career with Turkish side Trabzonspor. The move has sparked widespread debate among Egyptian and Arab football fans, not because of Salah's quality, but because many expected to see him join a club competing in the UEFA Champions League.
So, was Trabzonspor simply a financial decision? Or is the picture more complicated?
An Offer Difficult to Ignore
Reports suggest Trabzonspor presented Salah with one of the most lucrative contracts of his career, offering a two-year deal worth around €17 million per season, in addition to bonuses and a share of shirt and merchandise sales.
For a player entering the later stages of his career, securing one final major contract is a factor that cannot be ignored.
What About the Champions League?
At the same time, Salah's move naturally raises questions. Trabzonspor are not playing in the UEFA Champions League, a competition in which the Egyptian star has spent much of his career competing for the biggest honours with Liverpool.
It is true that the Turkish club still has the opportunity to compete in Europe through the UEFA Europa League, but the level of competition and global attention is very different from that of the Champions League.
Were His Options Limited?
So far, there have been no credible reports linking Salah with serious offers from Europe's elite clubs following his departure from Liverpool.
If the strongest proposals genuinely came from Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United States, then the decision looks rather different. Choosing Trabzonspor would allow Salah to remain in European football instead of moving away from the continent altogether.
More Than Just Football
Trabzonspor have made no secret of the commercial value of signing Salah.
The club may not boast the global stars found at Europe's biggest sides, but it understands that one of world football's most recognisable players will bring enormous media attention, increased shirt sales, stronger sponsorship opportunities and worldwide exposure.
Was It the Right Decision?
Ultimately, the answer will depend on what Salah achieves on the pitch.
If he succeeds in leading Trabzonspor to trophies and memorable European campaigns, the move could be remembered as the perfect new challenge at this stage of his career.
However, if the financial aspects overshadow the sporting achievements, one question is likely to remain:
Could Mohamed Salah have continued playing for a club competing in the UEFA Champions League?
