Egypt has been officially entrusted with hosting one of the most important African tournaments linked to the future of the game, after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded the country the organization of the 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.

The tournament will serve as a qualification pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, giving the event major significance for the continent’s emerging talents and national teams.

The decision followed a hosting bid submitted by the Egyptian Football Association, backed by a government commitment from the Minister of Youth and Sports. Egypt’s extensive experience in hosting major continental competitions, along with its sporting infrastructure and organizational capabilities, were key elements supporting the bid.

Continental Confidence in Egypt

Hosting the tournament represents more than another event on Egypt’s sporting calendar. It also reflects CAF’s continued confidence in Egypt’s ability to stage major African competitions.

The tournament is part of CAF’s schedule of youth competitions for 2027. Ghana is set to host the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, Morocco will stage the U-17 tournament, while Egypt will take responsibility for the U-23 competition.

According to the proposed schedule referenced by the Egyptian Football Association, the finals are expected to take place in November 2027. The tournament will then become a crucial stage for teams seeking qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The Olympic Dream Starts in Egypt

The tournament carries additional importance for Egyptian football because the national Olympic team will compete on home soil, giving it the opportunity to benefit from home support in one of the most important qualification campaigns on the road to the Olympics.

Egypt previously hosted the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations edition that served as the qualifying tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Egyptian team won that tournament under coach Shawky Gharib.

Alongside the hosting decision, the Egyptian Football Association is also facing the challenge of appointing a head coach for the Olympic team. Shawky Gharib remains among the names being considered, while attempts to approach other candidates have reportedly been complicated by their existing club commitments.

Egypt’s hosting plans also extend beyond the U-23 competition. The country is scheduled to host the North African U-20 tournament from September 21 to October 6, 2026, further highlighting the federation’s strategy of using major youth competitions as part of the development process for its national teams.

The U-23 Africa Cup of Nations therefore represents more than a hosting opportunity. For Egypt, it could become the starting point of a new Olympic project, bringing together the continent’s best young talents while giving the Pharaohs a valuable chance to compete for a place at Los Angeles 2028.
