Roufida Fathi Wins Gold and Silver in Mediterranean Games Weightlifting

Egyptian weightlifter Roufida Fathi continued Egypt’s strong run at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto after winning two medals, taking one gold and one silver in weightlifting.
Fathi delivered a strong performance throughout the competition. She first won the silver medal in the snatch after lifting 101 kg, before adding a gold medal in the clean and jerk with a successful lift of 129 kg.
Gold and Silver
Fathi started her medal run by finishing second in the snatch competition after lifting 101 kg in a tough contest against the other competitors.
The Egyptian lifter then produced an even stronger performance in the clean and jerk. Her 129 kg lift was enough to secure the gold medal and give Egypt another top-place finish at the Mediterranean Games.
Her achievement is part of a strong campaign by Egypt’s weightlifting team, which entered the tournament with several experienced and successful athletes and hopes to add more medals before the end of the Games.
The Egyptian squad includes Olympic star Sara Samir, Karim Kahla, Abdelrahman Younes, Abdelrahman Hussein Metwally and Mahmoud Hosny, as well as Nora Essam, Mirna Mohamed and Nour El-Din.
The team is led by head coach Alaa Hassan Kamel, alongside Egyptian Weightlifting Federation secretary-general Mohamed Ehsan and coach Misho. The technical staff prepared the athletes ahead of the tournament with the aim of competing for the top places.
Egypt Keeps Winning Medals
Fathy’s two medals also helped increase Egypt’s overall medal total at the Mediterranean Games. According to the announced standings at the time of her achievement, Egypt had reached 42 medals, including 14 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze.
The Egyptian delegation remained the leading Arab nation in the medal standings while continuing to compete with several countries for a higher position in the overall table.
Egypt is taking part in 23 sports at the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games, including athletics, boxing, fencing, judo, karate, handball, table tennis, shooting, wrestling and weightlifting, among several other events.
Fathy’s gold and silver medals give another boost to Egypt’s weightlifting team, which includes several athletes with international and world-level achievements and is looking to keep Egypt on the podium until the end of the Games.
