One Step Closer to AFCON.. Egypt U20 Beat Tunisia to Take Control of North Africa Qualifiers

Egypt’s U20 national team, featuring players born in 2007, continued its strong run in the North African qualifiers for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations after securing an important 2-1 victory over Tunisia at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium.
The Egyptian side recorded its second win of the qualifiers, moving to six points and taking sole control of the top of the standings as it moved another step closer to reaching the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Egypt started the match strongly and controlled large parts of the first half. Tunisia increased the pressure later in the game and pushed for an equalizer, but Egypt managed to protect its lead until the final whistle.
Early Egyptian Double
Egypt began the match with clear attacking intent and earned a penalty early in the game. Mohannad El-Shamy converted the spot kick in the 16th minute to give Egypt the lead.
The hosts continued to push forward instead of protecting the one-goal advantage, and their pressure produced a second goal in the 32nd minute.
Omar El-Ezzab delivered a cross into the area, and after the Tunisian goalkeeper failed to deal with the ball cleanly, Mohamed Hamd reacted quickly and finished into the net to make it 2-0.
Egypt went into halftime with a two-goal advantage after making good use of its chances and controlling much of the opening 45 minutes.
Tunisia showed a stronger attacking approach after the break and managed to get back into the match in the 66th minute through Anis Saidi, who reduced the deficit to one goal.
Egypt came close to scoring a third in the 72nd minute when Omar El-Ezzab hit the crossbar.
The closing stages became more difficult for Egypt as Tunisia pushed for an equalizer. In the 85th minute, the woodwork denied Tunisia a second goal, allowing Egypt to maintain its 2-1 lead until the end.
Victory Secures Qualification
The win took Egypt to six points from two matches, placing the team alone at the top of the North African qualifying standings.
Morocco sit second with four points from two matches, while Algeria also have four points but have already played three games.
Tunisia remain on two points from three matches, while Libya are bottom of the standings with no points from two games.
The North African qualifiers are being held in Egypt from September 24 to October 6, with Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya competing for qualification.
The top two teams in the standings will qualify for the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, which is scheduled to be held in Ghana.
Egypt will face Morocco in its next match, and another victory would officially secure the young Pharaohs a place in the continental tournament.
After collecting maximum points from their opening two matches, Egypt are now in a strong position, but the team will be looking to continue its positive results and secure qualification without needing complicated calculations in the final stage of the qualifiers.
