“Not Even a Photo”: Benin Coach Criticises Treatment at Messi Farewell

Lionel Messi's farewell match with Argentina sparked frustration within the Benin national team after players complained about how they were treated following the international friendly at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.
Despite the celebrations surrounding Messi's final appearance, the Benin delegation left disappointed after players were reportedly prevented from taking photos with the Argentine star or exchanging shirts with Argentina's players.
The Farewell
Argentina secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Benin in Messi's final international appearance, with thousands of supporters filling the stadium to celebrate their captain's remarkable career.
Messi delivered an impressive performance, scoring from the penalty spot and providing two assists for Nicolas Otamendi and Nico Paz.
The Argentine legend ended his international career with 126 goals in 208 appearances, closing an unforgettable chapter in his country's football history.
The Monumental Stadium witnessed emotional celebrations as supporters and teammates paid tribute to Messi, whose international achievements include winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Benin's Anger
French journalist Romain Molina reported growing frustration within the Benin delegation over the team's travel and accommodation arrangements, as well as restrictions imposed after the match.
According to Molina, Benin players were unable to take photos with Messi or exchange shirts with Argentina's players.
They were also prevented from entering the tunnel leading to the home team's dressing room.
Benin head coach Gernot Rohr confirmed that his players had tried to collect shirts and take memorable photos, but security restrictions stopped them.
Rohr explained that he managed to get Messi's signature on an old shirt through Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni.
However, his players were unable to receive the souvenirs they had hoped for.
Despite his disappointment, the Benin coach praised the experience of facing Argentina, describing the match as a valuable opportunity for his young players to gain international experience.
While Argentina celebrated the end of Messi's extraordinary international career, Benin's complaints over the post-match treatment created controversy, leaving the two teams with very different memories of the farewell night.
