The Egyptian Football Association Considers Hosting the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations.. A New Ambition After the 2026 World Cup

Following the momentum generated by Egypt's impressive campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Egyptian Football Association has begun outlining a new phase focused on capitalizing on recent successes by pursuing the hosting of major international tournaments. At the forefront of these plans is a serious bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a move that reflects ambitions extending beyond the continental stage toward hosting global sporting events in the future.
Egypt Prepares Its 2028 AFCON Bid
Hamada El Sherbiny, a member of the Egyptian Football Association's Board of Directors, confirmed that the federation is seriously discussing the preparation of a comprehensive bid to host the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. He stressed that the project enjoys significant support, backed by Egypt's modern stadiums and advanced sports infrastructure.
He added that the EFA is coordinating with the relevant authorities while relying on strong governmental backing and the country's extensive experience in organizing major continental and international sporting events over the years.
Officials believe that Egypt's existing infrastructure, along with ongoing stadium and facility development projects, gives the country a strong advantage in the race to host the tournament. Egypt has previously organized the Africa Cup of Nations five times, most recently in 2019, earning widespread praise for its successful organization.
The World Cup Dream Begins with Africa
El Sherbiny also noted that Egypt's historic performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, coupled with the nationwide celebrations that followed, has provided fresh motivation to continue developing Egyptian football. He described President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's honoring of the national team after its historic campaign as a powerful gesture that has inspired everyone involved to aim for even greater achievements.
However, Egypt's ambitions do not stop at hosting AFCON. The Egyptian Football Association views the 2028 tournament as a key milestone in a long-term strategy designed to strengthen the country's readiness for future bids to host even larger events, most notably the FIFA World Cup, by building on its growing sports infrastructure and proven organizational expertise.
A final decision on submitting Egypt's official bid is expected in the coming period. Meanwhile, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, while attention gradually turns to the competition for the hosting rights of the 2028 edition, which Egypt hopes will mark the beginning of a new era in staging the continent's biggest football events.
