Egypt claimed an important morale-boosting victory over Russia with a 1-0 win in the friendly match held on Thursday evening at Cairo International Stadium, as part of the Pharaohs’ final stage of preparations for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The win was not just a friendly result before travelling to America. It carried several technical messages for Hossam Hassan and his coaching staff, especially as the match came at a sensitive time before Egypt enters the World Cup atmosphere, where the Pharaohs face a tough challenge in Group G alongside Belgium, Iran and New Zealand.

Mostafa Abdel Raouf “Ziko” scored the only goal of the match in the 65th minute, rising to meet a perfect cross from Mohamed Hany and heading it powerfully into the net, marking an ideal start in his first international appearance for Egypt.

Ziko Revives an Old Memory Against Russia

Ziko’s goal brought back memories of an old Egyptian victory over Russia in 1991, when the Pharaohs won 2-1 thanks to goals from Ahmed Ramzy and Hossam Hassan. Now, the current generation has added another win to Egypt’s record against Russia.

The victory also gave Hossam Hassan a special boost, as it marked his first win as Egypt’s head coach against a European opponent, after losing to Croatia in the Egypt Capital Cup and drawing with Spain in a previous friendly.

Beyond the result, it was clear that the coaching staff treated the match as a comprehensive test, giving several players a chance and trying different tactical shapes before finalizing the squad that will travel to the United States.

Egypt started the match with early pressure and a clear desire to score. Emam Ashour nearly opened the scoring after receiving a pass from Trezeguet inside the box, but his shot went just wide. Trezeguet then tried to capitalize on Mohamed Hany’s cross, but his effort went over the bar, before Omar Marmoush threatened Russia’s goal with a low shot that passed narrowly wide.

On the other side, Russia appeared only in brief spells and failed to create real danger on Mostafa Shobeir’s goal in the first half, apart from a few crosses and long-range attempts.

Hossam Hassan’s Messages Before the American Trip

The match witnessed Mohamed Abdelmonem’s return to the starting lineup after a long absence due to injury, an important step for the coaching staff as they look to regain one of their key defensive options before the World Cup.

Hossam Hassan started with Omar Marmoush leading the attack, supported by the attacking trio of Zizo, Trezeguet and Emam Ashour. The national team coach then began making early changes, bringing on Haitham Hassan, Mostafa Ziko and Ibrahim Adel instead of Zizo, Trezeguet and Emam Ashour.

At the beginning of the second half, Hossam Hassan continued his experimental approach, introducing Mohamed El Shenawy and Rami Rabia in place of Mostafa Shobeir and Mohamed Abdelmonem, before later changing the shape of midfield by bringing on Nabil Emad “Donga” instead of Omar Marmoush.

The decisive moment came from the right flank, when Mohamed Hany delivered an accurate cross that Ziko met with a clinical header into the net, giving Egypt a valuable goal and proving that the new faces may have something important to offer in the next stage.

In the final minutes, Russia pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Egypt’s defense dealt firmly with the pressure. Mohamed El Shenawy also appeared at a crucial moment, making an important intervention to stop a dangerous Russian attack before the final whistle.

Egypt nearly doubled their lead in stoppage time, when Mahmoud Saber fired a powerful shot that was saved by the Russian goalkeeper. Ibrahim Adel followed up, only to be denied again, before the ball reached Hossam Abdelmaguid, whose effort went over the bar.

With this win, Egypt enters the final stage of its World Cup preparations with better morale before travelling to Ohio to face Brazil in a friendly in the early hours of June 7, in the final rehearsal before the global campaign begins.

The biggest gain from the Russia match remains that Egypt came away with a victory, a goal from a new face, and a useful technical test that gave Hossam Hassan more indicators before the toughest decision: choosing the final squad that will carry Egyptian hopes at the World Cup.
