Al Ahly Beat Zamalek in Egyptian Handball Derby to Claim Club World Bronze

Al Ahly's men's handball team achieved another international milestone after defeating traditional rivals Zamalek 30-25 on Thursday evening in the third-place playoff of the 2026 IHF Super Globe, the World Club Handball Championship hosted by Egypt in the New Administrative Capital.
The victory earned Al Ahly their second bronze medal in the competition and their third world club medal overall.
The Egyptian club previously won silver in 2007 and secured bronze in 2024 after defeating Spanish giants Barcelona.
The all-Egyptian encounter featured intense competition between the two rivals, but Al Ahly controlled key periods of the match and eventually claimed a five-goal victory, securing another place on the international handball podium.
Al Ahly Take Control
Al Ahly started strongly, using organized attacking play and efficient finishing to establish an early advantage.
Their performance allowed them to finish the first half with a comfortable 19-13 lead.
Several players stood out during the opening period.
Mohamed Bassiouny, known as Mody, and Seif Hany, nicknamed Fox, delivered impressive performances for Al Ahly, while Youssef Amr was among Zamalek's most influential players as his team attempted to reduce the deficit.
In the second half, Al Ahly maintained their lead despite Zamalek's attempts to fight back.
The team benefited from its experienced players, disciplined defensive organization, and important saves from goalkeeper Mohamed Ibrahim.
Those contributions helped Al Ahly preserve their advantage until the final whistle, sealing a 30-25 win and securing the bronze medal.
Seif Hany "Fox" received the Player of the Match award in recognition of his impressive performance and contribution to Al Ahly's victory.
Road to Bronze
Al Ahly's journey to the bronze medal featured several challenging matches.
The Egyptian side began its campaign with a 31-23 defeat against Hungarian club Veszprem before recovering with an impressive 35-17 victory over Kuwait's Burgan.
The team then recorded an important 30-27 win against German side Fuchse Berlin in the main round, continuing its campaign before facing Zamalek in an all-Egyptian contest for third place.
Meanwhile, Zamalek opened their tournament with a convincing 42-17 victory over Morocco's Forum Derb Sultan but suffered a 39-29 defeat against Spanish giants Barcelona.
The White Knights later drew 28-28 with Brazilian side Pinheiros, reaching the bronze-medal playoff against their domestic rivals.
However, Zamalek could not overcome Al Ahly in the final encounter and finished the tournament in fourth place.
Following the match, Al Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib congratulated the players, coaching staff, administrative team, and medical staff on their achievement.
El Khatib praised the players' determination, fighting spirit, and commitment to delivering another international medal for the club's supporters.
He emphasized that the bronze medal reflected the collective efforts of everyone involved in Al Ahly's handball department and highlighted the importance of building on this success.
The club president also called for strong preparations ahead of the African Club Championship, scheduled to begin in Angola on Saturday, stressing that the upcoming competition would require continued focus and hard work.
El Khatib also thanked Al Ahly supporters for their continuous encouragement of the club's teams in domestic, continental, and international competitions.
With this result, Al Ahly concluded their World Club Handball Championship campaign with another international medal, adding a new achievement to the club's history before shifting their attention to the upcoming African challenge.
