Five Egyptians Storm Egypt Open Squash Semifinals as Bad Weather Disrupts Tournament

Egyptian squash stars continued their impressive performances at the 2026–2027 Egypt Open, with five players securing places in the semifinals after a series of strong quarterfinal victories, highlighting Egypt's continued success in one of the world's biggest squash tournaments.
The tournament, taking place in Cairo from October 10 to 16, has brought together some of the world's leading players.
Egyptian competitors have delivered outstanding results despite unexpected schedule changes caused by difficult weather conditions.
Five Egyptian Stars Move Closer to the Finals
In the women's competition, Nouran Gohar defeated fellow Egyptian Nour El Sherbini 3-1 in an exciting quarterfinal match.
Gohar won the match with game scores of 11-7, 7-11, 11-5 and 11-4, securing her place in the semifinals after a competitive encounter between two of Egypt's leading players.
Amina Orfi also continued her excellent run with a convincing 3-0 victory over England's Gina Kennedy.
Orfi controlled the match and won 11-7, 11-7 and 11-3, showing her strong form as she moved one step closer to competing for the title.
Hania El Hammamy completed the Egyptian women's success after defeating Japan's Satomi Watanabe in a thrilling five-game battle.
The Egyptian player eventually secured a 3-2 victory, winning the deciding game 11-5 to earn her place in the semifinals.
In the men's competition, Karim Abdel Gawad produced an impressive performance against England's Marwan ElShorbagy.
Abdel Gawad claimed a straight-game victory with scores of 15-13, 13-11 and 11-7, securing his position among the tournament's final four players.
Mostafa Asal also advanced after defeating fellow Egyptian Mohamed Zakaria 3-0.
Asal won the match 11-9, 11-2 and 11-5, adding another Egyptian name to the semifinal lineup.
These results mean Egypt will have three representatives in the women's semifinals and two in the men's competition, increasing the country's chances of winning titles on home soil.
Bad Weather Forces Schedule Changes as Title Race Continues
Away from the action on court, tournament organizers faced an unexpected challenge when poor weather conditions forced the postponement of several matches scheduled for the second day of the quarterfinals.
The Professional Squash Association announced changes to the competition schedule, including moving the remaining quarterfinal matches from the courts near the Giza Pyramids to venues in 6th of October City.
The decision was made to provide suitable playing conditions and allow the tournament to continue safely.
The weather disruption forced organizers to adjust the match schedule while waiting for conditions to improve.
The Egypt Open is one of the most important events of the current squash season, as it belongs to the Diamond category, the highest level of tournaments on the Professional Squash Association tour.
The announced prize money stands at $366,000 for the men's competition and the same amount for the women's event, bringing the combined total to $732,000.
This reflects the tournament's importance and the high level of competition among the world's leading squash players.
Egypt has also enjoyed strong participation in this year's event, with 35 players competing, including 16 men and 19 women.
The large Egyptian presence highlights the country's impressive depth of talent and its ability to produce players capable of competing at the highest international level.
Attention now turns to the semifinals, where the five Egyptian players will aim to continue their winning runs and secure places in the finals.
With the tournament approaching its decisive stages, Egyptian fans will be hoping their stars can take advantage of playing at home and turn their strong semifinal presence into another memorable achievement for Egyptian squash.
