Mido Questions Why Al Ahly’s Players Face Financial Penalties but Coaches Do Not

Former Zamalek and Egypt star Ahmed Hossam Mido has sparked debate after criticizing Al Ahly's decision to impose increased financial penalties on its players and suspend their payments following the team's draw against Al Qanah in the Egyptian Premier League.
Mido's comments come at a difficult time for Al Ahly, with the club facing criticism over inconsistent performances and disappointing results since the beginning of the season.
The former Egypt international believes that holding players solely responsible is not the right solution, arguing that the coaching staff must also take responsibility for the team's struggles.
Mido Slams Sanctions
Mido expressed his frustration through his official account on X, describing the suspension of players' payments as an unusual measure in world football and suggesting that such decisions are mainly associated with Egyptian clubs.
He questioned why similar penalties had not been imposed on the coaching staff, explaining that the team's poor performances cannot be blamed entirely on the players.
According to Mido, the head coach and his assistants also have a responsibility to prepare the squad, select the right tactics, and help players perform at their best.
He believes Al Ahly's disappointing displays in several matches this season require a wider review of the team's problems rather than simply introducing financial punishments.
His comments have also raised questions about whether financial penalties can improve team performances or whether they place additional pressure on players during difficult periods.
Al Ahly Warning
Meanwhile, Al Ahly's management has taken firm action following the draw against Al Qanah, deciding to increase financial penalties and suspend players' payments in an effort to restore discipline and improve results.
Football director Wael Gomaa held a lengthy meeting with the squad, attended by head coach Hussein Ammouta, to discuss the team's declining technical and physical performances.
During the meeting, players were reminded of their responsibilities and the importance of following tactical instructions, maintaining discipline, and improving their individual and collective performances.
Gomaa also stressed that the club's interests must always come first and that every player must prove his value through commitment and strong performances on the pitch.
Al Ahly's management hopes these measures will send a clear message that disappointing results and poor performances will not be accepted as the team looks to return to winning ways.
However, Mido's criticism has reopened the debate about shared responsibility between players and coaches and whether financial sanctions alone can solve the team's problems.
The biggest challenge for Al Ahly now is to turn these decisions into a positive response on the pitch, improve performances, and meet supporters' expectations instead of allowing the debate over punishments to continue.
