Schobeir: Mohamed Abdelmonem Set for Egypt Return After South Sudan Dispute

Mohamed Abdelmonem, the Nice defender, is back in the spotlight around Egypt’s national team following reports of his call-up for the November camp ahead of two matches against Malawi in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The move follows debate over his lack of playing time against Angola and his absence from the trip to South Sudan, opening the way for a fresh start with head coach Hossam Hassan and his staff.
According to the supplied reports, Egypt’s coaching staff want to move past those events and make use of Abdelmonem in the next stage.
Broadcaster Ahmed Shobier welcomed the development, describing the defender’s return to the national team’s plans as an important step before the qualifying campaign continues.
Fresh Start
Sawt Al-Umma reported that Hossam Hassan had moved to address Abdelmonem’s frustration after he did not play against Angola.
The report added that the coach had promised him playing time against Malawi in an effort to ease tensions and bring the focus back to football.
The same report said the defender had asked to miss the South Sudan match because it was being played on an artificial surface.
Shobier also discussed that incident, explaining that he had previously criticised Abdelmonem’s decision not to travel and believed the player had made the wrong choice.
However, Shobier welcomed a fresh start.
As reported by Sada El-Balad and Ahl Masr, he said Abdelmonem’s inclusion among the overseas-based players selected for the next camp was a positive development that would help Egypt make use of its available players.
The broadcaster also revealed that he had held a lengthy phone call with national team director Ibrahim Hassan.
During the conversation, he listened to Hassan’s account of the events and drew on information from other sources to understand the situation.
Shobier said he had called for any disagreements to be put aside and for a new start with the players.
According to his account, Ibrahim Hassan responded that selection remained open to everyone, that the staff had no disputes with any player, and that the aim was to have players ready to perform at their best for Egypt.
Those comments point to an effort to calm the debate around the incident and shift attention towards the players’ preparations and what they can contribute in the coming matches.
Malawi Test
These developments come ahead of Egypt’s November camp, when the team will prepare for two meetings with Malawi in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
Sawt Al-Umma listed November 13 and 17 as the dates for the third- and fourth-round fixtures.
The expected return gives Abdelmonem a chance to re-establish his place in the national team.
His playing time, however, will depend on the coaching staff’s decisions and his readiness when the camp begins.
Being named among the selected players allows him to compete for a place in defence, while his exact role on the pitch remains to be decided.
Shobier expressed confidence in what the defender could offer, pointing to his recent improvement with Nice.
He also stressed that the next stage would require everyone to work together to help Egypt achieve its goals.
As part of its coverage of the preparations, Sawt Al-Umma also reported that assistant coach Tarek Soliman would lead the bench against Malawi.
The outlet linked that arrangement to what it described as a three-match FIFA suspension for Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan.
With reports of efforts to ease the tension and public support for his return, attention now turns to the November camp.
Abdelmonem will have the chance to turn a fresh start into a meaningful contribution, while the coaching staff will look to benefit from his return during the qualifying campaign.
